How do you spell “entitlement”?

July 10, 2009 by Andrea Mrozek 5 Comments

Pay my loans. Pay my mortgage. Pay my rent. And promise you’ll care for the kids I don’t yet have. Even though I was able to afford a university degree, and I live in Vancouver, I still believe my life is harder than those living in Africa.

Quite a letter in the Citizen today.

I personally would also demand that the government provide free, grandé, extra-hot, non-fat lattés for those mornings when it feels hard to get up.

Wowee.

Nah…you wouldn’t.  If you think paying off your student loans is a drag, try paying $40 a week for diapers.  You know, those women in poor countries don’t use disposables so they just don’t have that same burden.  (Man alive! This lady’s something special.)

    Cringeworthy. I believe it’s spelled S-P-O-I-L-T.

I wasn’t sure whether it was S-E-L-F-I-S-H. But good thought.

The author of this letter was responding to this statement (the entire op-ed can be read here: http://www.ottawacitizen.com/technology/Refusing+multiply/1758699/story.html).

“Individual autonomy is among the great benefits of the secular West. We are liberated from the obligation to reproduce ourselves. It’s all about choice, as it should be. Too bad there’s no way, at least none that I can think of, to get young liberal westerners to choose parenthood.”

Fair enough, really: we bitch and moan when people who can’t support their children have them, and we bitch and moan when people put off having children in order to secure their finances. So my sympathies lean toward Rachel Garrick: you want me to save the nation by having kids, then make it worth my while.

Let us hope no changes occur to the existing system. We do not need any little reproductions of her.
