Where will you spend Christmas?

Published by Andrea Mrozek at 11:00 am

Because Linda Gibbons will spend it in jail. Lifesite News is asking people to help encourage her by sending a Christmas card. I’m going to do that.

Linda prayerfully and quietly witnesses in front of Ontario abortion clinics, in violation of an unjust “bubble zone” law.

I wasn’t around when the bubble zone laws were created. I believe they are unnecessary today and are an infringement on our freedoms. I have further heard that Linda Gibbons herself is a peaceful lady. (We might be less inclined to sympathize with an angry protestor, shouting women who go for abortions down. That wouldn’t change the facts of the case–that these laws are not just–but in any event, I’ve heard Linda is a sympathetic lady.)

So send her a card if you can. There’s rules (see link) on what she can and cannot receive in jail. What a world we live in.

We should be launching a petition to the Attorney General of Ontario to rescind this “temporary” bubble zone. Legislated in 1994 by Bob Rae’s government, it has never been challenged, and Linda has never had the means to hire a lawyer who could challenge it. So her defense has always been appointed and they simply go through the motions, with Linda ending up in jail. She refuses bail because the conditions state that she cannot appear before any abortion clinic in Ontario ever again. So her jail terms are the stand of someone who is defending her freedom of speech.

The fact that this woman has spent over 7 years in jail out of the last 15, all for peacefully approaching women who are seeking to abort their children, is something one would expect in North Korea, not in Canada.

Enough is enough. Let’s start a FREE LINDA campaign!

Lifesite is carrying this? The jail will need an extra mail-van to carry them all. That’s going to be a lot of cards.

I regard the bubble-zone laws, like abortion itsself, as an unfortunate necessity. Abortion is a topic that will get people on both sides very worked up, and occasionally a protestor is going to get overexcited or overzealous and attempt to use force or physical intimidation. Most of them are well-behaved and peaceful, but some measure is needed to deal with the few who arn’t.

“I regard the bubble-zone laws, like abortion itsself [sic], as an unfortunate necessity.”

Neither one is a necessity. The bubble zone laws serve only one purpose: to stifle dissent. The “overzealous” can be dealt with on the basis of their actions.
