One reason not to get a car

Published by Andrea Mrozek at 7:25 pm

I’ve been known to complain about OC Transpo, in particular during the eternal driver strike in minus 50 weather last winter. Today, however, was a bright moment, which I’ll share with you. Tonight as I boarded the bus, the driver was very polite, very kind, and said hello to every passenger getting on in crowded rush hour traffic (and there were many of us).

I’m sitting there staring out the window into the dark December night when I hear a robust tenor voice start singing, loudly, “What child is this who laid to rest in Mary’s lap is sleeping”–you know the Christmas carol to the tune of Greensleeves. Concluding with a strong finish: “this, this is Christ the King” resonating throughout the bus…I was smiling and was quite sure he was done. But no.

Only in Ottawa would a bus driver carry forward with the exact same Christmas song, this time in French.

Made my evening, that.

I think that’s what we might call an EPIC WIN. Happy Christmas!

And what did you say you were smoking?

Christmas has way just to cheer everyone up. The songs, the lights, the darkness, the snow….

Chantal, I totally agree, it tends to put that little extra bit of spring into my step. When I have to run errands, I deliberately spread them out to different days just for an excuse to walk downtown (Victoria) every day for all the decorations and music! (There are even banners up that have bells on them that jingle when the wind blows! How awesome is that?) :-)

I envy you. The best I’ve ever gotten on a bus was “Make the World Go Away”, and I’m pretty sure drink was involved.

Krusty, maybe next time you can be the one to start a good Christmas carol (with or without drink). ;-)

Andrea, be prepared to defend this driver if someone lays a charge against him. There are some mean crusty old folks out there who would do just that, being as how we can no longer say anything about the real meaning of Christmas.

Julie, I did think of that. But then I thought–he’s got his bases covered, singing in both French and English. Equal opportunity offence for mentioning Christ as King in the public. That will be my first line of defence for him should it ever come to that. :-)

    Julie C:
They might be mean and crusty but this anti Christmas stuff is not from us old folks. There was none of that PC stuff years ago it has been a thing of recent history. Anyway I hope everyone has a very MERRY CHRISTMAS & A HOLY NEW YEAR!

Bob, you’re right, how awful to be young and crusty and mean!
