Paul Tuns hit the bull's-eye. Here is a minor clarification of terminology.

Idiot is a medical term, still in use, denoting a degree of Mental Retardation. A person, once normal, who loses his/her marbles, is properly called demented.

In Diane Francis' case, it may be Dementia Liberalis, chronically progressive form.

Dementia Liberalis afflicts persons of any age, gender, race, or sexual orientation. It is an equal opportunity disease of the intellect and morals, epidemic in North America, and difficult to treat. Shock treatment is currently showing promise. There is no vaccine against it, yet.

If left untreated, the condition becomes irreversible. Diane Francis may have crossed that point.

I agree with Paul's assessment based on what I've read of her recently. Too bad - because I used to love her.

Thanks, Paul.

I think I've been living in the 1990s Diane zone; the eternal optimist in me thought this can't be real.

This modest proposal is right up there with eating babies to solve the problem of hungry people.

Unfortunately, I don't think it is satire. Diane Francis was on the John Oakley Show (640 AM in Toronto) on November 24 and again today advocating the one-child policy and promoting abortion as the sensible and necessary thing to do to control an out of control population. Those times I have seen her speak in person, she has also raised the issue and there was never any indication that it was not a serious proposal on her behalf.

I would also disagree that Diane Francis is not an idiot. She has fallen for the charms of Barack Obama, fretted about global climate change, and resorts to tired leftist arguments about geopolitics. She might be inclined to a pro-business position, but even that is suspect at times. The Diane Francis of 2009 is not the Diane Francis that promoted free enterprise and personal liberty in the 1990s. I wish I were wrong, because the old Diane was a much more insightful read.
