How can we know that later term abortions happen in Canada?

June 5, 2014 by Andrea Mrozek 7 Comments

When an abortion clinic in Toronto advertises it:

Patients who are over 19 weeks up to 23 weeks will need to come for 3 consecutive days. The 1st and 2nd days are for laminaria insertions, and the procedure will be done on the 3rd day. The procedure is done with conscious sedation (I.V. and local freezing). The procedure takes approximately 15 – 20 minutes. Recovery time any where from half an hour to an hour.

If you are undecided about whether to keep your baby, this website sends you to a site, Pregnancy Options, to help with the decision. There, they help women understand that every faith, including Pope John Paul II on behalf of Catholicism, sanctions abortion as a valid, if difficult, choice.

My question is why they aren’t called out for this. Lying to women while claiming to help them equals not cool.

Cabbagetown clinic is not in business to represent the Catholic position on anything. And quoting ‘Catholics for Choice’ is like asking Justin Trudeau for pro-life news- it does not matter what this group calls itself; they are not, or never have been, Catholic. To be Catholic is to be totally pro-life, without exceptions. That is the message of Saint John Paul II!

Who would call them out but prolifers? And they aren’t going to pay any attention to what we say.

Sheesh. And they claim pregnancy care centres lie to women.

Clearly, they haven’t read JP II’s 1995 encyclical, Evangelium Vitae, in which he names abortion as one of the gravest threats to humanity.

The text they cited IS from Evangelium Vitae, no. 18, even if they don’t cite it by name. It is a direct quote and hasn’t been twisted. I don’t know how it got on there, since though the Pope says a woman’s guilt may be mitigated if she is acting in desperation (i.e. she may not be guilty of mortal sin), the abortion is nevertheless wrong in all cases. This leads me to think they probably didn’t understand the quote; they probably got tripped up on the distinction between subjective guilt and objective wrong. The rest of the section is pure liberal Catholic malarkey though, about how the people get to vote on what is moral, and conscience is supreme, etc.

There are some other very beautiful and tender words to post-abortive women at the end of the encyclical (no. 99):

“I would now like to say a special word to women who have had an abortion. The Church is aware of the many factors which may have influenced your decision, and she does not doubt that in many cases it was a painful and even shattering decision. The wound in your heart may not yet have healed. Certainly what happened was and remains terribly wrong. But do not give in to discouragement and do not lose hope. Try rather to understand what happened and face it honestly. If you have not already done so, give yourselves over with humility and trust to repentance. The Father of mercies is ready to give you his forgiveness and his peace in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. To the same Father and his mercy you can with sure hope entrust your child. With the friendly and expert help and advice of other people, and as a result of your own painful experience, you can be among the most eloquent defenders of everyone’s right to life. Through your commitment to life, whether by accepting the birth of other children or by welcoming and caring for those most in need of someone to be close to them, you will become promoters of a new way of looking at human life.”

Oh dear. I’ve spent some time in prayer outside this centre recently, and now I’m even more sickened…

And twisting the words of St. JP2 on top of it…blah. Lord have mercy on our society.

Aid to Women, a very good pregnancy resource center is next door to the Cabbagetown abortionist that advertises those lies and kills many babies. Aid to Women wants to move down from the second floor to ground level so they can save more babies from abortion. They need lots of money to do so. Please see link and donate http://www.aidtowomen.ca/

That the conscience is supreme IS standard Catholic teaching, Lori. And like it or not (personally I like it), in a democracy we DO get to vote on moral issues. Would be nice if we got to vote on this particular issue, but we haven’t had a serious vote on it since a handful of prolife senators bungled it, by helping to defeat Bill C-43(?) and throwing Canada into the current abortion legislation void.

Thanks for sourcing the JPII quote. If the abortion advocates who posted it actually understood what it said, I don’t think they would have been so quick to post it. It actually portrays a woman who is having an abortion as rather helpless, buffeted around by forces outside her that she can’t control. It is certainly not the portrayal of a strong, empowered woman, fearlessly making her own choices.

Offering forgiveness and reconciliation to someone who has done wrong is not the same thing as saying no wrong has been done.
