Drowned out at Saint Mary’s University

February 9, 2009 by Tanya Zaleski 7 Comments

Jojo Ruba from CCBR was shouted down during a presentation he was giving at Saint Mary’s University in Nova Scotia.

[youtube:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eulKIaVM9DE]

According to the above YouTube poster:

The small group of Abortion supporters blocked the projector, swore at the presenter, and drowned out attempts at communication for over an hour, until a St. Mary’s Conflict Resolution Official inexplicably chose to order the students (still sitting quietly in their seats) to leave rather than have the unruly mob arrested by police.

Jojo Ruba had this to say:

What looks worse, shutting down a university-approved presentation or arresting people who are unlawfully disrupting that presentation?” asked Ruba, who said he was appalled the university gave in to mob rule. “St. Mary’s should be ashamed of itself for showing students they need only scream when they don’t like something, rather than dialogue respectfully.”

I don’t know where these university students got the idea that it was OK to squelch free speech.  Alright, so maybe I do.

A link to the article in the Chronicle Herald.

Note that the Women’s Centre at SMU is thinking of laying charges against the chaplain with the Human Rights Commission for having this speaker on campus. They claim that he is anti-choice (hey, he is an RC priest – last time I checked, they were pro life), that he can’t represent all students, and that the speech had some disturbing elements. The woman making these claims didn’t even hear the talk.

    Ezra, are you out there?

They really feel threatened don’t they? How embarrassing for them, if they had the sense to be embarrassed.

After reading about the comparison of the holocaust to abortion in the link you provided I was a bit surprised. To me that is not a fair comparison at all. There have been far more babies murdered by abortion than the holocaust. Seriously though I do not personally care for that style of Pro Life support with pics and videos of abortion but I do believe they have the right to do it whether myself or anyone else likes it or not.

The analogy to the holocaust is not based on numbers alone. The first comparision is the dehumanization of a group of people in order to justify eliminating them. Just as the Jews were declared non-persons in Nazi Germany, fetuses are declared not to be persons in our law.
Another comparison the group makes is that the killings are carried out in designated centres, in Germany the camps, in our country – sterile hospitals and clinics with wards specifically for abortions.
The use of the Jews and their bodies for medical experimentation is another comparison between the Holocaust and abortion – many people do not know the vast extent to which aborted babies are used in research, in drug tests, in the making of vaccines, in consumer products such as make-up for one.
And the last comparison CCBR makes is the disposal of the dead as if they are trash, without decent burials. Again no recognition of the personhood of the Jew or the unborn. I
I would also submit myself that you could not defend the Jews in Germany, and it is difficult to defend the unborn. But we do not lose our lives for it here, although one woman is in jail.

Campus security should have removed the protesters. I feel badly for the students who took time out of their busy schedules to attend the presentation. They wanted to hear it, and their freedom of hearing was impinged upon by these protesters. Jojo Ruba dealt with them calmly and kindly. Such a contrast to the shrillness of the protesters, as is usually the case. Nobody was telling anyone what to do with their bodies….anyone else tired of that chant?

The most ironic chant was “We will not allow hate speech.” What a funny thing to YELL ANGRILY. They should change that to “We will not allow FREE speech.” That is really what they meant.

My favourite part of the video:

    Being shouted by a man:

“Pro-Life men have got to go. When you get pregnant let us know.”

    And the most insightful observation:

“You’re here to compare abortion to the Holocaust and slavery. That’s racist.”

While this was certainly not meant to be a funny video, I couldn’t help myself from laughing out loud…
