A fresh look at 1 Corinthians 13

May 23, 2013 by Faye Sonier 2 Comments

How can we be more loving in sharing the pro-life message? An interesting application of 1 Cor 13 by Tim Brahm:

While I was reflecting on this problem a few months ago, it reminded me of 1 Corinthians 13.  I wrote my struggles into the text, not to elevate my thoughts to the level of Scripture, but to remind myself of the power of a passage quoted so often that I hear the words without thinking about what they mean.  Below, I’ve placed the original text in bold type with my added thoughts in normal type.

If I speak with the conviction of a great apologist, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

And if I have great powers of perception, and understand all science and philosophy, and if I have all faith, so as to inspire a congregation, but have not love, I am nothing.

If I give away all excess income to pregnancy care centers and take in unwed mothers, and if I deliver up my reputation for the cause of saving unborn babies, but have not love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient; it listens and seeks to understand rather than merely waiting for the chance to respond.

Love is kind; it treats everyone as a valuable human being made in the image of God – not just embryos, fetuses, and those who agree with us.

A book I often find rewarding is Jonah. Here’s this guy Jonah who continually challenges or acts contrary to the wishes of God and isn’t keen on carrying a message from God to the Ninevites and gets annoyed when God forgives the Ninevites (who had a pretty nasty history) or inconveniences Jonah’s shade on a hot day. Upon being asked if he has a right to be angry Jonah replies; ‘I’m so right, I have a right to die’. God then responds with; ‘There are 120,000 people in that great city who do not know there right from there left and cattle. Should I not care?’.

What I see is a simpleness that resonates with Corinthians and might shed light on Pro Life messaging. A caring message is in a caring way. A loving message is in a loving way. Yet, the message has content. There was content of the message to Ninevah and there is content to be shared in Pro Life issues. This ‘love’ is not loving if it is trying to make someone simply ‘feel’ good. This ‘love’, from the Greek word ‘agape’, spoken of in Corinthians embraces the discernment and deliberate assent of the will intentioned for the well being of the other. It is not the ‘love’ from the Greek ‘philo’ which describes fondness, affection, or sentiment found in words like ‘Philadelphia’, ‘the city of brotherly love’.

Thus, a loving Pro-Life message is to be in word and deed the embodiment of the well being of the other. Some times it’s a glass of water but not; ‘Here, take this, I got to run.’ It might be; ‘Would you like a glass of water. May I sit with you.’ Or it might be; ‘I understand abortion hurts women. I’d like to help.’ not ‘You’re wrong’. It might be, ‘Oh, you’re wondering about abortion would you like to talk about what that means?’ but not; ‘Oh you’re wondering about an abortion. How could you? or on the other hand the vapid, ‘Well, I really do believe that that is your choice’.

The amazing thing to me is that at any and all moments loving can be done. It of course involves discernment as to ‘what’, ‘how’ and ‘when’ but that is not to imply an impediment for ‘discernment’ is part of love to begin with.

What a great message! It’s often hard because there is too much vitriol and too little love in the debate. I’m saving this.
