A get out of jail free card

July 14, 2009 by Tanya Zaleski 3 Comments

Apparently, you can say the most appalling things, so long as you are pro-choice. A few days ago, US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg had this to say:

Reproductive choice has to be straightened out… Frankly I had thought that at the time Roe was decided, there was concern about population growth and particularly growth in populations that we don’t want to have too many of.

And those ‘excuse-me-what-did-she-just-say?’ words only help underscore the recent release of the documentary film Mafaa 21.

As a sidebar, if you’re a minority woman in the US, you’re five times more likely than a white woman to terminate your pregnancy. (In Canada, we simply prefer not to keep statistics.)

Does anyone know the statistics on abortion in the native populations here? I have read some things that indicate they are very high.
On another note, when I had a mammogram last year, I noticed the lack of a question in the questionnaire posed by the nurse.

“Have you had any abortions?” that seems to me a prime way for them to glean the numbers of women with breast cancer and the relation to abortions. So why don’t they ask the question? too politically incorrect?

Did you post yet on the Smithsonian’s honouring of Margaret Sanger? She’d be pretty happy that her plan to reduce the population amongst “undesirables” is coming to fruition. What this judge said is more or less what Sanger said.

It doesn’t seem clear to me that Ginsberg is speaking in support of eugenics; rather, based on the surrounding comments, it seems like she is describing other people’s viewpoints in the quote posted here, saying that she thought they would agree to fund abortions through Medicaid for different reasons than she would and was surprised when they didn’t. I can’t imagine why a pro-choicer would want government funded abortions if she suspected that they would be used to coerce women into aborting and obviously, from her comments, doesn’t support that, but I think in context it seems that she’s using the “we” in the sense of society as a whole, not in the sense of a group that she agrees with.
