A quarter of Canadians believe abortion is “unacceptable”

April 24, 2014 by Andrea Mrozek 2 Comments

Sad. From the Pew Research Global Values project.

Alternatively, should I be encouraged? One in four Canadians believe abortion is unacceptable! That’s strong language.

Click around a bit, there are some really interesting global comparisons. I see there are limitations to only having three possible answers: “Acceptable,” “Unacceptable,” and “not a moral issue.” Still, interesting.

I was more discouraged by the people who said it wasn’t a moral issue.

Judging from the people I know, most people think it should be legal but that it should be treated as a last resort. They also think the time limit of 24 weeks (in the uk) is much too late. Therefore, officially in such surveys they’d be classed as thinking abortion is acceptable, when in reality they have much more conservative views than the leftists would have you believe.

I think most people would only answer “unacceptable” if they believed that abortion should either be illegal or only performed in extreme circumstances. So it’s actually encouraging that 25% of people are outright against abortion, and many of the “acceptable” crowd probably have their reservations.
