Worth reading every word of this one. The author, Kay Hymowitz, debunks myths about the gender pay gap (again) but takes the whole idea seriously, identifying and attempting explanations where real problems remain.

I was speaking to a university professor about this, and they suggested that another reason for this difference is a sort of “Darwinian ceiling”. The theory goes that men and women do what we do in order to be attractive to the largest population of prospective mates (lipstick, reading certain books, driving certain cars, eating certain foods etc.). Men, then, can earn wages and work long hours and will not limit their selection of potentials. Women, as the theory goes, simply by making more money than their male potentials, start limiting the number of mates in their realm. Not saying I agree, but it’s interesting to think about.
It would be nice if the workforce was just populated by a good mix to begin with, but history doesn’t work that way.
