Bad arguments for abortion

January 2, 2011 by Andrea Mrozek 6 Comments

This quick article identifies four of them. And these, incidentally, are the main arguments you hear in support of abortion.

Which raises a point: is the pro-choice status quo based on any arguments at all? Arguably not. It’s based on emotion and feelings. Which is why an article like this won’t make a dent on how people think. I’m not saying we shouldn’t have good arguments. I’m not saying we shouldn’t shoot down bad arguments. But there’s something more than a good, well-argued debate to changing hearts and minds about abortion. Otherwise, pro-lifers would have won the day long ago.

“It’s based on emotion and feelings.”

Yes, it is. And so in the pro-life side. This is the abortion debate – logic rarely gets to squeeze in somewhere.

Well, actually the pro-life side does have science on its side. After all, we have laws protecting endangered species like the bald eagle and certain turtles, yet we won’t acknowledge that the unborn are human beings with rights.
The legalization of abortion is going to be one of the greatest disgraces that our society will have to own up to down the road.

I agree with you Suricou. The pro-life side often uses emotion (look at this adorable pre-born baby? Doesn’t it look human?) as well. And when there is emotion, there are heated emotions, and those certainly don’t do anybody any good. If I could wave my magical wand I would remove from the abortion debate: emotion, euphemism, religion. Happy New Year.

    Kristina:

The pro-life side uses emotion precisely because many people respond more readily to emotion than they do to reason. If you do manage to remove emotion, euphemism and religion from the debate, what you are left with are solid rational arguments supporting the pro-life position. Abortion is then seen for what it really is: the extermination of the weak by the strong.

I think Prolife/Democrats (Since they are ussauly the same people) are killing theire own cause! because most of the abortions are from Black and Hispanic people. Why knock off your own voting base? It makes no sence. Democrats would have 40-50 million more voters and would have completely destroyed the Republican party! I am a Republican but would rather the Democrats ruled in a pro life stance than have a Republican in power.
