Right. So I had not paid too much attention to Justin Bieber. Until now. Asked for his views on abortion, he had this to say:
I really don’t believe in abortion,” Bieber told the magazine. “It’s like killing a baby?”
Now why the question mark at the end of that, I don’t know, and he went on to express reservations about rape. But this is still a positive statement.
I actually think his position on this stuff matters. When it comes to changing the culture, we could use a few more hip Hollywood voices to speak for life. And this guy has millions of adoring fans. I always figured that if you are going to be famous, even if it is only for 15 seconds, you should use that time well. I would anyway. For the record, yes, if I won an Oscar I would speak for life from the podium. You have my word.
Anyhoo. His positioning on sex before marriage strikes me as weak–since “waiting to fall in love” is just a little bit of a sketchy concept for your average teenager.
Nonetheless, I hereby do solemnly swear to stop making fun of Justin Bieber.

I imagine the agent is going to be telling him never to take any stance on a political issue, not at this stage in his career. Too risky. His answers look vague to me – either he honestly hasn’t given any thought to these issues, or he is trying to play it as safe as possible by not taking any strong stances. Possibly both. It’s not his mind he is famous for.
The question mark is very sinister, it implies he doesn’t “know” what an abortion is. So, either he was asking if his statement was correct, or that’s been added to once again not define what a person is before birth, even from the mouth of Justin Bieber.
In the comments section of that article, people kept saying “he’s a child, we shouldn’t be asking a child these questions”. I would tend to agree, but he’s 16, probably about the age, if not a little older, of the actresses in this ad:

So either abortion is a 16 year old’s topic or it isn’t, but people, don’t say it is only when it’s to further the pro-abortion message.

Actually, children have an intuitive understanding of personhood that is uncontaminated by sexual feelings. A child understands that she/he was once an embryo, who then developed through the fetal, infant and child stages of her/his life, and that she/he will continue to develop through the adolescent and adult stages. Children are generally horrified when they find out there is such a thing as abortion. They feel a kinship with those who are at earlier stages of their development, and they see abortion as a direct and violent attack, one that could easily have been visited upon them.
Justin Bieber, however, is well beyond that stage, and the lure of sex is beginning to cloud his thinking. He could benefit from some sound training in Natural Law, both for his own good as well as for the message that he is well positioned to send, if only he could learn the fundamentals and then articulate them for a wider audience.
