This is fun. Cardinal Dolan gives the benediction at the Democratic National Convention and, as a Catholic, calls for courage to protect unborn life. I was thinking last night that provided Caroline Kennedy (as a Catholic) still believes in God, she’ll be called to account for her speaking to the masses in this way, and leading them astray. As a Catholic, my foot. That really gets me. I’m entirely used to all the “reproductive health/abortion rights” hoopla. Just don’t try and make Catholicism, or really, any living faith, sanction it.

I think Cardinal Dolan should not have gone to either convention. If he wishes to be neutral, as the church states that he must in matters of election (although he can vote for whomever he chooses personally), his presence at the abortion-palooza Democratic convention does more damage than any good his closing prayer might do. Attending gives the Democrats a sign of approval, definitely a mistake. Catholics remain thinking that they can vote for a pro-abortion candidate.
I get what you are saying, Julie. But I wonder about the ramifications of having the cardinal simply vacate the building… and his prayer was quite pointed.
Yes, the words of his prayer were very good. However, those Catholics who think they have a pass with all the clergy, obviously don’t listen to the words. The Catholic clergy have given the Kennedys a pass for years. When they fail to correct public persons who speak about their faith and get it wrong, they are essentially giving them an endorsement. And that speaks louder than words.
Now, if Cardinal Dolan asked to meet with Caroline Kennedy after the convention in order to set her straight, I would be impressed with him. As is, I fear that he thinks his Irish charm will allow him to work both sides of the fence. And we all should know what Jesus said about “fence sitters”.
