From the Calgary Herald:
The question then, is not why Tories are wimps. It is why a small faction has managed to so own the issue that even a discussion about having an abortion law — never mind what that law should say — is effectively excluded from the marketplace of ideas.
The Tories, the Liberals, whatever party will indeed discuss abortion when we, the voters, manage to overturn that small collection of very loud, strident pro-abortion voices. Of course, there could also be a partnership between reasonable voters, ie. that majority who supported Bill C-484 and solid leadership. Certainly defending Bill C-484 did not involve, gasp, being pro-life.
I can see things both ways but am more inclined to this Calgary Herald viewpoint than those Conservative pro-lifers who say they are dumping the Conservatives or not going to vote in the upcoming election.

Unfortunately every time the Tories think they are going to have a very good shot at winning a federal election they seem to dismiss those pro-life voices that as the old saying goes brung them there in the first place.
They are usually replaced by the more progressive elements and voices of the party known in older times as the red Tories who were known as Liberals in a hurry. As this Calgary Herald article clearly shows given a choice between the old progressive red Tory faction of the party or the Liberal Party those pro-life voices are either going to dump the Conservatives or not going to vote in the upcoming election at all.
Prime Minister Steven Harper and his Conservative Government seriously need to define who they are and where they stand on all these major pro-life issues prior to the call of a federal election campaign or face the consequences of loosing the base that helped bring them to the big dance as they say in sports jargin in the first place.
In the last federal election campaign I believe Mr. Harper and his Party had an excellent opportunity of forming a majority government but gave that opportunity away in the last two weeks of the campaign after he and his candidates started backing away their public support of pro-life issues fearing an opposition and media backlash.
The Prime Minister can not afford another federal election campaign where the opposition parties or the media define who he and his party is or what he and his party should be and stand for.
Canadians are looking for a national leader and government with integrity that is bold, courageous and willing to stand for principals that are worth protecting and make Canada the envy of the world once again.
