Abortion takes the lives of blacks disproportionately. And reported in The Times, no less. All the very horrifying news that’s fit to print:
byAbortion opponents say the number is so high because abortion clinics are deliberately located in black neighborhoods and prey upon black women. The evidence, they say, is everywhere: Planned Parenthood’s response to the anti-abortion ad that aired during theSuper Bowl featured two black athletes, they note, and several women’s clinics offered free services — including abortions — to evacuees after Hurricane Katrina.

Sensationalist scaremongering.
Abortion does indeed ‘impact’ blacks disproportionatly. That doesn’t mean targeting. They are more likely to abort because they have lower average income and education level, and a higher rate of unmarried pregnancy. Their higher abortion rate is just a symptom of this.
I find it just silly to argue that the siteing of abortion clinics is supposed to influence the abortion rate. A clinic isn’t going to magically get all those unmarried women pregnant – it can only fill a demand, not create it.
The only racists are are the anti-abortion activists who came up with this as a new and effective propaganda story. The closest they can get to real evidence is a PP operator accepting an obviously racially motivated donation – and I wonder how many unreleased calls the sting produced before finding an operator who would fall for it?
As for Katrina, well… one of the reasons women choose abortion is if an unexpected change in circumstances means they are no longer prepared to raise a child. I think having your home and workplace destroyed by a natural disaster qualify as a change in circumstances.
