M-312 defeated as expected

September 26, 2012 by Andrea Mrozek 11 Comments

People, the lead up was a good one, very productive. People talked about abortion, in the House of Commons and it did not implode.

We knew it wouldn’t pass, and it didn’t. 91 Yays, 203 Nays.

I didn’t note anything unexpected in those voting for and against. I was particularly happy to see Rona Ambrose vote yes, alongside Jason Kenney. If there are other cabinet ministers who voted yes who I missed, please let me know.

The supporters of the motion were even more than many had expected.

Other positive things: 1/3 of the Cabinet defied Harper and support the motion.

I counted at least 10 female MPs who supported the motion, despite all the inane NDP rhetoric that the motion was “anti-woman”.

Rona Ambrose was a positive surprise.

There were a few negative surprises too – some normally pro-life MPs who inexplicably voted the other way for the first time ever.

Alice Wong, Minister of State of Seniors, also voted in favour.

Thanks for the note about Wong — I missed her in my original tweet. Also, Diane Ablonczy, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas and Consular Affairs), voted for M-312.

Is the voting record for the motion available online yet?

I’m not a big supporter of the Conservative party these days on most things, but I did support this motion, and the issues it raised. Rona Ambrose, especially (thinking of her specific role), and also Gail Shea, Diane Ablonczy and Alice Wong, and all the other women who voted in favour of this, I applaud you for your courage. I applaud the men too, but I think women who are pro-life are often treated much more harshly by critics (some would even call them traitors) than pro-life men.

Also, kudos to the Liberals who supported this motion- I was not surprised at this list of names: Jim Karygiannis, John McKay, Kevin Lamoureux and Lawrence MacAulay.

Lifesite has a list here. I will check the Hansard online tomorrow. Lifesite has James Moore voting for it which I don’t think was the case when I watched the vote online, plus I am pretty sure Lois Brown voted in favour but she isn’t on this list.

Hansard is faster than I thought…here it the official list.

We should contact all of the MPs who supported the motion and thank them, especially Rona Ambrose, who is under fire from leftists for voting for the motion.

Thanks everyone. I’m going to be on CTV Newsnet discussing this at 11:30 so this is all very helpful.

The interesting thing about this debate is that the opposition won’t even acknowledge there’s a debate at all. Not one opposition MP has directly addressed Woodworth’s motion on it’s own merits. They just scream at Harper for letting the motion go forward, claim that society has moved on etc. It’s like trying to have a conversation with someone and instead of answering you they stick their fingers in their ears and hum and say “I can’t hear you”.
