Maternal health conference at Queen’s University

September 19, 2011 by Andrea Mrozek 9 Comments

“Can Canada have an effective global maternal health policy by excluding funding for abortions?”

Come and decide for yourself. I will debate Joyce Arthur of the Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada at a conference at Queen’s University on Saturday, October 1, 2011, starting at 2:45 pm.

This is open to the public and free of charge, so if you are in the neighbourhood, stop on in.

Amdreathere is an excellent article on the SPUC website about exporting maternal health programs to the third world. As someone who lived in Malawi for a year, when our first child was born, I can attest to the fact that abortion clinics in the third world would be a disaster. When people don’t have access to clean water and don’t have the basics of good hygiene available, how the heck is an abortion clinic going to manage?

This would be a great YouTube video or any kind of video. Will it be taped?

Who got to phrase the question?

In using the word ‘excluding’ there is the presumption that there is potential danger in not funding and gee maybe we should leave things alone and don’t exclude anything. The onus herein is on proving that something should be excluded.

Perhaps a better issue to discuss would be:
‘ Can Canada have an effective Global Maternal Health Policy by ADDING funding for abortions?’

In this latter question there is also a presumption. Leave well enough alone. Maternal health care does not include abortion. The onus is now on proving abortion should be added.

Much better strategy to make the abortion advocate prove that abortion is healthy.

Thanks for the link, Julie. Yes, it will be taped, Joanne.
And as for the question, it was given to me. However, I must say I’m fine with it… six one way, half dozen the other on how it is phrased to me!

    Great.
I was thinking of the adage: ‘If you can phrase the question you can facilitate the answer’. For example there is the old question to teachers: ‘Are you still beating the students?’ And the answer is?
Regardless, all the best and go for it.

Any idea why the “High School Program” shows a slightly different wording for this agenda item:

    2:00 – 4:00 Panel Discussion [OPTIONAL]
Can Canada have a global maternal health policy without reproductive rights (contraception and abortions) included?

Dan: I suspect it is a mistake. The organizers have been very organized and have clarified the debate question with me a couple of times. But I’ll confirm. Thanks for pointing that out!

What is the exact location at Queens for this weekend’s debate? I may be able to attend but am directionally challenged.

Theresa, if you put this address into Google maps, that should help!
    116 Barrie St. That’s where I’m headed, anyway. 🙂
