Me too, Mr. Ross, me too

April 12, 2011 by Andrea Mrozek 8 Comments

This letter, by one Thomas Ross of Calgary, longs for the day when people will begin “thinking rationally.” Here’s his view now:

A seed is not a plant. An egg is not a chicken. A fetus is not a human. A fetus does not become a living human until after birth when it takes its first breath of air. Before that, it is a parasite living in its mother’s environment and feeding off of her nutrients. You cannot murder something that is not living; that would be like if I stabbed a pop can and was arrested for assault. I long for the day when people realize it is not their business to tell others what they can and can’t do in their lives, and start thinking rationally. Sadly, I think we will all be long gone before anything like that happens.

Thomas Ross, Calgary

I cannot tell a lie: I laughed out loud when I hit the “thinking rationally” part.

Andrea: are you going to write a reply letter to the Calgary Herald? Mr. Ross’s stated position is so easy to demolish that it should not go unchallenged. Furthermore, such a letter might be a worthwhile exercise in explaining (a) the pro-life position to Calgary Herald readers, and (b) (although this is a distant secondary consideration), the meaning of the word “rational” to Mr. Ross.

Guess I could and should! But it’s hard to demolish an argument when you are still laughing this hard. And I fear writing letters on the topic of abortion that are too sardonic. Some people really do think this way, and although Mr. Ross was quite pompous in his presumed rationality, others will be humble and still believe the same thing. I’ll sleep on it and see what I can come up with!

I nearly fell over when I read Mr. Ross’s letter. Not only is he out of his mind, I wonder if he has been personally involved in an abortion; whether he has any kids of his own; whether he was/is terribly rejected from his own mother, and the list goes on. It’s amazing to read a letter like his. Twenty-six years ago the government acknowledged a “fetus” that was growing inside of me and assisted me with my adoption process up until and after I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. I thank God that my bio-daughter “came alive” at birth so that she could be raised by a couple who desperately wanted a child and who desperately loved her for all of these years. It’s been one year since my reunion with my bio-daughter. She is beautiful, vibrant, strong-willed and faith-filled. I love more now than when she was a “fetus” in my womb.

So glad T. Ross did not tell anyone what to think but was big enough to allow everyone to think through matters for themselves and not be badgered by a raving irrationalities.

I didn’t want to say this earlier but now I will: A man could never, ever know what it is like to carry a child, keep a child, offer up for adoption, or at worse, abort. Never.
