Mixed messages on maternal health, CBC The Current

March 19, 2010 by Andrea Mrozek 4 Comments

This morning at an hour in which I don’t generally talk to anyone, I joined CBC’s The Current for a discussion on the politics of maternal health. When the segment is up on the CBC web site, I’ll certainly link to it. For now, you can listen to me below. My main point: Compassionate care in the developing world does not include abortion.

I heard you live on CBC radio and thought you did a great job being articulate and addressing the issue. I was thrilled to hear you speak and love the website. Thanks for being a voice for the many who have no voice and those of us who have trouble speaking intelligently.

I caught part of The Current in which you participated and thought it important for me to make two points.

First, you referred a number of times to “Canadians”, in a sweeping and generalized way, as not being able to be behind abortion. We live in a country where our Charter of Rights and Freedoms upholds a woman’s right to choose abortion and to have access to abortion. We live in a country where a majority of people stand behind a woman’s right to choose. Your statement is incorrect and indefensible.

Second, you indicate that a group with a pro-choice political stance does not belong at the table yet you reflect an anti-choice political stance and think you belong at the table. By your logic, you do not belong there either. An anti-choice stance is not inherently apolitical or ethical.

Your blatantly incorrect claims and misrepresentation caused me to tune you out, though I did later return to find out who you were so I could hand on my comments.

    Wendy:
There is no charter right to abortion in Canada. That’s a fact.

And when I spoke of Canadians I spoke of the division that abortion causes. That’s the only commonality when abortion comes up.

Finally, it is not censorship to suggest that a party should not place a group at the table that is at odds with their vision. No one, least of all me, is suggesting that any group can’t agitate, lobby, do activist activities. Just not on government dime, particularly when said government had a different idea for a maternal health mandate.

This would ring true to you if we consider the years of Liberal rule where anti-abortion groups did not (and this continues) receive any spots around any tables in power, neither did they get a dime in funding. Were anti-abortion groups censored? Some might say they were, but not me.

    Sincerely,
    Andrea
