Statements like this one from the article kill me:
“She also called for employers to change their attitudes so women who want children can progress at a different pace than others.” And, “labour policies should be changed to make it easier for women to get pregnant in their peak child-bearing years, without sacrificing careers”
For a business to fulfill this requirement, it would have to arbitrarily give women a raise and/or promotion upon her return from child bearing in an effort to “catch her up” to her male counterparts. There is no other way to do it.
“Oh hi Susan, welcome back. Here’s a welcome back bonus and a new corner office…Henry got the same improvements while you were gone, so now you’re even”
This is the most condescending thing you could do to a women in the workplace and the surest way to steal away any credibility she might have earned before having children.
Matt, kills me too. I really, really think if people thought through the implications of what this is proposing NO ONE, least of all women would be in favour of it. It is entirely discriminatory. And arbitrary. Not to mention Rid-i-cu-lous.
(If you want to have a groan take a look at the Globe today. Big section on successful women, which is fine, but some of the sidebar comments are something else. Apparently any field that has mostly men in it is a sign of discrimination. Sigh.)
