Not in my name

April 30, 2010 by Andrea Mrozek 153 Comments

Welcome, Judith Timson! Welcome to my world. For years and years the government has funded abortions, supplied abortions, paid for them (since I started paying taxes) with my money. It wasn’t done in my name. And frankly, I don’t love the blood on my hands. In fact, this group was started so that women like you wouldn’t be the only ones to stand up at the time of the Morgentaler anniversary, to make a claim of “victory for women’s rights” as if you spoke for women everywhere. See, here’s the problem. You and your friends have been purportedly “representing” me in politics and the public square for quite some time. But you never did. It was frustrating, yes. So when you write this:

Here is a political question that for me, just won’t go away: In exactly whose name has the Harper government decided to withhold funds for access to safe abortion in their international maternal and child health initiative? Not in my name. And not in the names of countless Canadians who have relied for years on safe access to the procedure at government expense.

…I say, how do you like them apples?

Certainly, I’m glad you have a column, Judith, and can express yourself. You’re welcome to that. The point of this post is simply to highlight that for my entire life a pro-abortion status quo has been forced on me, pushing me to agree to some sort of “women’s right” that doesn’t exist.

Not in my name. Not in my name.

Wow. My immediate thought when I read Timson’s column yesterday was “Welcome to my world.” Great minds and all that. I wonder if Ms. Timson realizes that for the past 7 years, Environics polling, commissioned by LifeCanada, has found that between 60% and two-thirds of Canadians don’t support paying for all abortions as we now do in Canada. So, Ms. Timson, you are part of a minority who have had your way in this country, for many, many years. Enjoy.

So, are we going with an all-girl march?

Please take the time to write to Bev Oda and Stephen Harper and tell them that you appreciate the difficult but principled stand they have taken on this issue. You can BET that the pro-aborts are making their views known and politicians who stick their necks out on these and other issues like the recent euthanasia victory NEED TO HEAR FROM US!

I’m sure the intent of a “women’s only” pro-life march is a good one, but are you sure that we want to convey in ANY way that MEN aren’t just as responsible as women are for the lives of their unborn children? They certainly don’t need another reason to evade personal responsibility and dismiss abortion as “A woman’s problem”. Just sayin’.

Debbie–it conveys, on this issue where I’ve had the Judith Timson’s of the world “representing” me for years that I’m tired of that. It’s PR, in effect, nothing more. And if pro-lifers are tired of having the annual march overlooked in the media, we should try something new. I’m actually quite weary of the annual complaints of being overlooked. Do the same old thing and one can expect the same old response.

I am all for a woman’s MFL but know that the MFL in Washington is getting noticed more and more because it is so massive and growing every year. We are only at 11 while they are at 36 I think.

We don’t march because we want media attention. It would be a bonus to get some. We march for the children dying, the women harmed and in hope and prayer our fellow pro-lifers would be convinced to join us.

Please don’t take this the wrong way but there would be nothing more gorgeous than a March for Life with just women – beautiful!

Why don’t you aim for the next int’l day for women?

Since you and I are about the same age Andrea we can even add that when the Morgentaler decision in 1988 came down, we weren’t old enough to vote and therefore have never been given a choice.

Oh and not in my name either.

I think a women only march would be great. Definitely get across the fact that not all women are pro abortion. It would also go a long way toward neutering the notion the pro lifers are just a bunch of men trying to control women’s bodies.

@Marion: Yes, that silly notion. At the pro-life club at my college, the vast majority of its members are female. There are seriously only a few guys there, whereas the girls outnumber them 2-3 to 1. It’s really funny, actually.

Why should I have to pay for abortion, when “Pro Choice” says that it is a women’s right to choose, then it is also their oblication to pay.
