Given the increasing number of religious Jews in Israel, who have significantly higher birthrates than their secular counterparts, this means that the number of pregnancies ending in abortion amongst secular Jews in Israel is radically higher. Mass abortion is tragic in any context, for any people. But there is something especially bitter about this – there are too many people who consider Jewish lives to be disposable, and it’s heartbreaking that the behaviour of so many Jewish women places just as little value on the life of a Jewish baby as does the basest antisemite.

Rebecca,
Thank you for this powerful post. It’s indeed alarming and sad that, in a world where anti-semitism is heavily frowned upon (and rightfully so), that such a high percentage of secular Jews in Israel are procuring abortions.
It would be interesting to see actual statistics on the abortion rates of women in Israel who profess to be religious versus those who do not. I think it would be difficult to obtain such information, since many people are reluctant to admit to a religion. It’s not required to do so on a Canadian or U.S. census, and a lot of people don’t. Maybe that’s different in Israel than in North America, in Australia, or in Europe…

Not to be a nitpicker but it’s important not to get “caught” exaggerating right? There are also the statistical 1/3 of pregnancies which end in miscarriage too so that’s another 60000 pregnancies which pushes the 1 in 4 down to 1 in 5 (if I follow the logic for the 160000 correctly)
there that’s the good news for today…

David R.,
You make a good argument. I had thought about the rate of miscarriages and stillbirths before I added my earlier comment on this post, but whether 1 in 4 or 1 in 5 pregnancies end in abortion in Israel- this rate is not uncommon in most Western countries- it’s still abhorrent. I don’t think we’re getting caught exaggerating so much. The numbers quoted by both pro-life and pro-abortion sides- the latter tend to be even more ‘exaggerated’- tend not to be exact. At best, these figures are estimations, typically based on the rate of abortions per live births.
The point is that one life taken by induced abortion is too many. Even worse, a small segment of societies where abortion is permitted does not consider unborn lives to be human and therefore worthy of protection and, God forbid, ‘rights.’ Possibly worse yet are those who are numb to this industry of human slaughter that takes one life- the unborn child- each time and harms the health of at least one other- the woman undergoing the abortion. There’s hardly good news there…

Israel, O Israel!! no wonder that the wolf is always after you.!!! it is because of the constant flow of innocent blood!!! HaShem made a promise to Avraham that his descendants will be like the sand of the sea!
yet, on pupose you are thwarthing His plan for Israel!! Return to HaShen, Return to the Torah and be healed, even the whole land.
only you can break the curse and restore His devine protection and blessings to Israel.
6 million Jews killed in Holocaust
in 60 years of independance 6 million babies were aborted
currently 6 million Jews living in Israel
it is disturbing to see the 6 6 6 figure (the sign of man) in these figures.
let us repent!

Abortions were made legal in Israel in 1979, over the last 30 years it appears that about 20,000 abortions occur/yr 30×20,000 is approximately 600,000 unborn children. This is still a large number for such a small country.
