I love dogs. Truly. But this strikes me as insane. Remember the case of the baby killed by the dog in Calgary? People are volunteering to adopt that dog. Now there’s a liability I don’t want… I remember my friend’s dog simply nipping unnecessarily at her toddler and she had the dog put down. It’s very sad. But when dogs kill people, I do think they should be put down, not adopted. I can negotiate this position for dogs that simply bite people, although being attacked is less than fun. (This happened to me some 28 years ago, and I’ve not forgotten. Scar’s still there, too–physical, not emotional.)

I saw this story a couple days a ago, and was appalled. On the same day, there was a letter to the editor in the Edmonton Journal where the writer started by saying, “I can’t believe my tax dollars are being used to kill wildlife!” It was about 145 black bears killed at a dump in northern Alberta. Imagine if this same person had said, “I can’t believe my tax dollars are being used to kill 10,000 children a year in Alberta!” Alas, no outrage.
Alana, thanks for your comment. I removed the subsequent very rude comment of some cretin, and apologize for it. (I can’t control the crazies, but I can remove their comments!)
Don’t worry about me, Andrea. I’m not offended by trolls. The writer’s incredible lack of irony would be hilarious if it weren’t so pathetic. These people often accuse us of being black and white and, yet, their own inability to see grey is frustrating. I do care about animals and don’t want to see them harmed but I know that animals and humans are on very different planes.
The dog should be put down.
It was put down last week.
