The bubble zones around abortion clinics are interesting. They are an infringement on freedom of speech, and this has (possibly–I’m not a lawyer) broader implications. Example: If I run a Wal-Mart, say, and someone starts a protest of globalization outside my doors, and that offends me, might I get a bubble zone too, based on this precedent?
In any event, someone is sandwich-boarded up inside the bubble zone not to protest abortion, but to inform about the bubble zones. Read about it, here.
Soon after two plainclothes Vancouver police officers arrived and went directly into the building. They emerged 45 minutes later to speak with von Dehn, informing her that she was not breaking the bubble zone law, and adding that clinic workers were upset at her actions.”
Clever protest, that. Keep up the good work.

At the kick-off rally for the 40 Days For Life event tonight we were talking with a very nice Officer Lalonde across from the Morgentaler abortuary on Bank St. He said in Ottawa there is no bubble zone!! He told us that because Ottawa sees itself as the height of tolerance, and since everyone has the right to free speech and protest, that as long as it is peaceful, there is no bubble zone for protesting.
Having said that, the 40 Days vigil in Ottawa will still be across the street from Morgentaler’s mill, since there is more sidewalk space (wouldn’t want to impede public flow). And I am not sure every law enforcement agent has been given the same info about no bubble zones (unless there is a dignitary involved).
But I thought I’d pass on info that I found enlightening and certainly didn’t know before!
