You know, all it would take is one strong woman. That’s all. For Pete’s sake. I know abortion is the third rail in politics but it really doesn’t have to be and I don’t understand why even women like Elizabeth May who previously have said reasonable things on abortion (“I don’t think a woman has a frivolous right to choose. What I don’t want is a desperate woman to die in an illegal abortion”) feels she has to backpeddle so furiously. As she does, here.
You know, there are those who criticize the American political scene because there are politicians who become pro-life in order to run. Yes, it’s true. They aren’t really pro-life but they say they are, in order to win votes. (Unheard of!) In any event, that is just as bad as the Canadian scene where politicians apparently would rather jam a fork in their eye than say they are pro-life, even if they are. Simple truths like “abortion is wrong,” or “partial-birth abortion is deplorable” should not be so hard to say. Or how about a simple “I’m pro-life, so deal with it”?

I don’t even want to vote in this election. I’m just so disgusted with all of them.
You’re right, Andrea. All it would take is one strong woman. But we are SO flipping polite in this country that we can’t tolerate any serious disagreement. And so this issue, which is unresolved and will always be unresolved, is the big elephant in the living room that no one talks about, because if we talk about it, the fight is gonna get ugly.
PS. You’re a strong woman. Andrea Mrozek for MP?

I share your disgust, Melissa.
I will be voting, but it won’t be for any candidates that I know of.
I’ll be spoiling my ballot to show that while I still take the time to vote and do my part to help direct this country, I don’t feel that any of the available leaders are acceptable.
And rather than cling to the fool’s dream of them miraculously discovering the reasons for this entirely on their own, I’ll be telling them in my own words why NONE OF THEM deserve my vote.
God bless, all, and take care.
I think I will have to spoil my ballot as well, for the same reasons as Maestro. None of the candidates should hold office and I will state that. I have heard they read the spoiled ballots, does anyone know?
What I have done in the past when there was no suitable candidate is this — when I am handed my ballot, I give it back to the person working the table and tell him/her that I am returning my ballot and not voting. They are supposed to ask why, and then write it down on an official form. I have said, “No pro-life candidate”, and that’s what they write.
@Suzanne: Seriously? That’s a fantastic idea! I have been racking my brains trying to figure out what the heck to do with my vote that will *matter* without supporting a pro-choice cadidate/party. I hate the idea of just not voting, and all other political leanings aside, abortion is truly my make-or-break issue.
Thanks for the idea!!
