A follow up post to the maternal health saga of last week. This week I will be writing Mr. Dave Toycen of World Vision a letter, because this press release says World Vision is partnering with Action Canada Population and Development. I’ll ask why they chose to do so. Does World Vision believe abortion is part of maternal health? If not, how did Action Canada wheedle their way in to this otherwise good group of charities? I need to hear a concrete answer. This press release doesn’t look good.

Andrea, please post anything you find on this, as my husband and I have sponsored three children for many years now with World Vision. And, if they are partnered in any way with abortion, then we will cease our sponsorship.
Andrea Mrozek says
Will do, Julie.
Suzanne A. says
We sponsored children through World Vision for twenty years. In the later years of sponsorship we received innumerable mailings requesting extra funds or asking us to sponsor another child. A few years ago, door-to-door solicitations of sponsorships began, and again they asked us to sponsor another child. I actually contacted WV to see if this means of obtaining funds/sponsorships was legitimate. I never heard back from them. So I ceased sponsorship and sent my money elsewhere. Too bad…they do great work, but the combination of those factors left me frustrated.
I too will be interested to hear/read what is up with this news.
Rachelle says
I just terminated my sponsorships. I went to the Action Canada Population and Development site and searched abortion and they are very much abortion centered. Arg! I love those little kids. But, I also hate abortion and I can’t support that.
Andrea Mrozek says
Rachelle,
I hope you told them why. I think it’s important that they know. I’m pretty close to doing so as well, but will write a letter first and await a reply. It’s tough to give up on my sponsored child!! and I’d like to at least do it ceremoniously. And be very clear why I am… Arg is right.
Deborah says
As an alternative option, you could try to sponsor a child through World Vision in different countries if that is possible. Find out if the World Vision USA supports abortion or any others. National chapters do operate independently. I couldn’t find out about USA, but a quick google search shows that WV Australia does not support abortion. Maybe it is possible to sponsor children through WV Australia instead. Just a creative thought! It IS important to remember that all the WV organisations in each country operate independently (plus WV International).
Heather P. says
On the same note as Deborah, there are other entirely different organizations available to sponsor children. We sponsor through CCCI (Catholic Children Childcare International) out of Springhill, NS. You may be able to guess their stance on abortion simply from their name, and I also find them to be very transparent and open about what they DO stand for. They are non-preachy (if that’s a word) and do great work!
Alex says
I used to sponsor a child through World Vision and stopped several years ago. I wrote to them asking them if their partners participated in the distribution of contraceptives. While they were evasive, they did not deny it. Now I am sposnorship a child though Chalice in Springhill NS.
I was also very concerned about World Vision’s repeated requests to get me to sposnor another child. This compares to Chalice that sends me an update every 6 months or so – and is clearly more focused on helping children rather than trying to get the max $ out of me.
Rachelle says
I need to right a wrong! I did send them an email saying that I would like to end my sponsorships if they give money to abortion providers. I heard back them and they said that they have no money going towards this organization. They are partnered with the government, and the government is partnered with ACPD, but they are not connected. Sorry about increasing some of the hype.
Andrea Mrozek says
Rachelle: Don’t be too apologetic. World Vision is in a coalition of their own volition with Action Canada. The coalition was not created by the government, the coalition was formed to lobby the government.
Action Canada is strongly affiliated with Planned Parenthood. When Action Canada says family planning, they mean abortion included to be sure. World Vision may not, but they lend credibility to Action Canada by partnering with them.
More on this soon.
shon says
I don’t know about abortion, but World Magazine did an article on World Vision’s support of birth control pills a couple of years ago. These pills are chemical abortions. Email them about the pills… I can guarantee that they will get defensive. They won’t deny it, nor confirm it. If they believe that the pills do nothing wrong, and do not cause an abortion, then why get so tense? No need to get defensive, unless you have something to hide.

Good Lord Folks! Have you seen the infomercials on kids under 4 years old, looking like 2 years old and dying of starvaton? There are never any “Daddy’s” in sight. Why won’t you understand that the prevention of unwanted children is the only way to stop them suffering in this world. How cruel to not give birth control pills to mothers, educate, educate and educate. No more hungry kids should be the goal. You go hungry for a week and see how you like it!
Eddy'sGal says
Eleanor – I appreciate your compassion for starving children in the world, it is commendable, however to suggest abortion is a means of preventing said starving children, is about as ludicrous as suggesting all children or those more likely to be in a position to be molested, should just be exterminated to avoid that happening to them. I was recently contacted by WV, and at first glance, it looked like something I wanted to lend support to. However, as I do not believe abortion is okay for ANY reason – indeed what can justify the murder of an unborn child – I decided to check to be certain that should I choose to sponsor their organization, would any money at all be given to further abortion in any form? I have my answer here. For this same reason, I will not sponsor Susan G. Komen – they sponsor Planned Parenthood and abortion.
Liz says
If you don’t believe in abortion, you should definitely be pro birth control. I never understand how you can call yourself “pro-life” and watch these poor children die agonizing deaths of starvation and violence at the age of 5 or 6 years old. Step out of your privileged world and see reality.
Monica says
Is the solution to poverty is to make sure there are less poor people, ie the provision of abortion and contraception. Do we really care for the poor when we have this attitude? They are human beings who deserve respect and dignity, not animals to be eliminated or selectively reduced to salve our consciences!
The real solution to the problem of poverty is helping people to realise that they have a soul and an eternal destiny, encouraging them to to act rationally with self control and giving them the tools and knowledge to make their lives better materially. I would like to find an organisation that tries to achieve these three ends!
Eddy'sGal says
Monica, you should check out Compassion International. I found them and they do what you are looking for. I’m currently sponsoring a young man in the Philippines. I am able to correspond with him, his parents, his pastor and it’s all been great. He gets an education, food and medical care. Just an FYI.
Liria says
Liz, I’m with you.
Contraceptives are essential to stop the population explosion in third world countries to reduce poverty and disease. Women are being raped and you are sitting in your cosy home condemning them should they want to abort the child of their rapist. It really does make me sick when people get up on their moral high horse whilst living in some of the best conditions in the world. I am a strong believer in that if you know the child will not have a decent life, not be offered basic support nor a good education then you are being completely irresponsible.
I urge all you ‘pro-lifers’ to consider different perspectives on the matter.
Rianne says
Liria, I can see your point.
I understand that women are being taken advantage of and raped. This is awful – worse than awful. However, at what fault is the child? Many of us have parents who have done awful things, so does that mean WE should be killed? Or.. is it possible for us to turn out good anyways and potentially change the world?
Even though aborting a child would leave a family with more food for the rest, it is only alleviating one injustice by means of another injustice. Since when does that ever work?! No. Abortion is not the solution. Us sitting in our cosy homes, getting OFF our cosy couches is the solution; giving the excess we have. Living simply so others may simply live. It requires more effort than providing abortions and minimizing the amount of poor people; but it ensures that one injustice isn’t replaced by another. It is the only clean, lasting solution.
So hi.. anybody who’s reading this. Get off your couch! I’m sponsoring through Chalice Child Sponsorship today! You should do it too! Did you buy a coffee today? Well, skip the coffee tomorrow and use the money to save someone’s life instead!
