This news item about the birth of Rufus Wainwright’s daughter is remarkable in that it is actually very confusing but no one is supposed to notice. I gather Rufus and his partner had a baby daughter with a surrogate (the daughter of Leonard Cohen) but she is not the surrogate. She is the mom. And Rufus is “Daddy #1”. My only point is that it’s hard not to read and reread to try and figure it out.
So I did so listening to this. Still love this song regardless of the mess that is his personal life.

I can see how it might be confusing if it’s assumed that Cohen is a surrogate, but after Rufus explained that Cohen is not a surrogate, she’s the mother, it makes perfect sense to me. Wainwright and his fiance obviously wanted a child and so did Cohen, so they did and they’re all the parents. What a great choice for all! They must have a very close, loving relationship between them all and such love will be a great place for a kid 🙂
I am not the least concerned with Wainwrights personal status but I am very concerned about the environment that baby is going to grow up in if what this story leads to is true.
I am a huge fan of Leonard Cohen and I believe Hallelujah is his finest effort and despite many fine covers his is the definitive version.
