Language does not need to make sense.
Using ‘childless’ to mean ‘without children’ is perfectly fine in many situations such as academic work, but it does risk the meaning being misinterpreted if short extracts are quoted elsewhere – and the standard of scientific reporting in non-specialist press, and even most popular-science press, is quite appalling.
Attempts to deliberatly alter language fail more often than they succeed. Just let it play out, and see what happens.
