Americans may tell pollsters they’re pro-choice, but at the state level they don’t act like it.
I’m not sure Americans do tell pollsters they are pro-choice anymore, but even if they did, on the state by state level there is a lot of variation. One reason (among many) why abortion politics are so acrimonious in the States is that Roe v Wade mandates something the grassroots in many states entirely, wholeheartedly and vociferously disagree with.
What I get from this is that most Americans are against Roe vs Wade. Even those who say they think abortion should be legal in most circumstances still think it should be illegal sometimes.
It’s interesting that the only western countries (that I know of) that effectively have no restrictions on abortion at any stage of pregnancy are countries where the practice was made legal by judicial fiat. Where people have actually gotten to vote on it, as in Australia and Europe, there are many more restrictions.
