Is this the UN’s definition of ‘freedom of speech’?

March 3, 2009 by Tanya Zaleski Leave a Comment

Came across this article on Slate.com. I’m really not one to slam the Islamic faith, and certainly not using  blanket statements. I agree with the idea that generalizations are equivalent to blatant ignorance. And one thing I hate to be is ignorant.

It goes beyond not wanting to come off as a redneck. I actually know many Muslims. I am friends with Muslims. I have Muslim family members. (So please spare me any comments about how I should be more supportive of initiatives towards religious tolerance.)

The Slate.com article links to the UN General Assembly Resolution in question (A-RES/62/154). Little known fact about me: I love reading UN resolutions. This one was particularly entertaining. Especially page 3.

… everyone has the right to hold opinions without interference and the right to freedom of expression, and that the exercise of these rights carries with it special duties and responsibilities and may therefore be subject to limitations as are provided for by law and are necessary for respect of the rights or reputations of others, protection of national security or of public order, public health or morals and respect for religions and beliefs…

Are you really allowed to use the terms ‘without interference’ and ‘legal limitations’ in the same sentence? Well, they are the United Nations. I guess they can say whatever they want. You and I, on the other hand…

Palin disinvited

September 27, 2008 by Tanya Zaleski 1 Comment

Organizers disinvite Sarah Palin, who was originally scheduled to speak along with Hillary Clinton at a rally. The New York Sun published the full speech.

In the words of one Jewish journalist, the rally was “against Iran’s plan to destroy Israel.”

It was a remarkable speech, prepared by a remarkable woman. But it was not heard…because the Democratic Party and Jewish Democrats believe that their partisan interest in demonizing Palin and making Americans…hate and fear her to secure their votes for Obama…is more important than allowing Palin to elevate the necessity of preventing a second Holocaust to the top of the US’s national security agenda…

The moment that Clinton found out that she was to share a stage with Palin, she cancelled her appearance. By cancelling, she signaled to Jewish Democrats – and Democrats in general – that opposing Palin and the Republican Party is more important than opposing Ahmadinejad and the genocidal regime he represents.

THE JEWISH Democrats on the rally’s organizing committee got the message loud and clear. Two of the rally’s co-sponsors…disinvited Palin…

[Liberals]…uphold themselves as champions of human rights… They care about the environment. They care about securing American women’s unfettered access to abortions. They care about keeping Christianity and God out of the public sphere. They care about offering peace to those who are actively seeking their destruction so that they can applaud themselves for their open-mindedness and tell themselves how much better they are than savage conservatives.

Those horrible, war-mongering, Bambi killing, unborn baby defending, God-believing conservatives, who think that there are things worth going to war to protect, must be defeated at all costs. They must intimidate, attack, demonize and defeat those conservatives who think that the free women of the West should be standing shoulder to shoulder not with Planned Parenthood, but with the women of the Islamic world who are enslaved by a misogynist Shari’a legal code that treats them as slaves and deprives them of control not simply of their wombs, but of their faces, their hair, their arms, their legs, their minds and their hearts.

When OBGYNs think they’re helping women but are actually hurting them

June 14, 2008 by Rebecca Walberg Leave a Comment

And I’m not talking about abortion. William Saletan defends western doctors who do “hymen reconstructions” to “revirginize” women (overwhelmingly, and in the context of this article, Muslim women) so they don’t face the (sometimes fatal) consequences of not being virgins on their wedding nights. I have very mixed feelings about this.

Certainly, in any individual case, the compassionate and appropriate response may well be to do the operation. Even in situations where women who aren’t virgins (or, in fact, may well be virgins but not have sufficient evidence of this) aren’t in fear for their physical safety, humiliation and ostracism aren’t fun. And if we allow consenting adult women to pay to have saline implanted in their chests or synthetic substances injected into their lips, it’s hard to make a case that hymen reconstruction shouldn’t be done. But every doctor who plays along with this sick worldview helps this sort of treatment of women to limp along for another day.

The “importance” of virginity – an update

June 11, 2008 by Brigitte Pellerin Leave a Comment

Following this story from France. Please take the time to read this. And explain to me why, as far as I can tell, North American feminists have nothing to say about this issue.

Andrea adds:

In my culture, not to be a virgin is to be dirt,” said the student, perched on a hospital bed as she awaited surgery on Thursday. “Right now, virginity is more important to me than life.

Um, how to say this. Clearly it is not, because you had sex. And now want to pretend that you did not.

As for why North American feminists have nothing to say, that much is clear. It is not Christianity they would be criticizing, so why bother.

Beware the false freedom?

March 21, 2008 by Brigitte Pellerin Leave a Comment

So now they have young girls on television advising other young girls to keep wearing the hijab, otherwise they won’t be allowed in Paradise.

My Muslim sisters, I would like to say that a lot of films would seem to be destroying the hijab. So, my sister, you should be careful with these destroying voices, because they fight Islam, and they are against its progress. So my sister, you must keep your hijab to enter Paradise. My sisters in Europe, in America, in the whole world, I would like to advise you that your hijab protects you from this false freedom, and in fact, [Westerners] don’t understand anything except destroying their humanity, and satisfying their animal instincts. At last, let me say that the hijab is the best protection for any girl in the world.

Where, I ask again, are the feminists?[h/t LGF]

Véronique says: On the other hand, as a pro-life advocate I have a lot of sympathy for the “beware of false freedom” speech. As “for Westerners don’t understand anything except destroying their humanity, and satisfying their animal instincts” Well, uh… who said that sin was the only religious dogma that could be proven by opening the day’s paper?

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think the veil is the way to liberation. But they do have some kind of a point, don’t they?
