Earthquakes and family policy

May 27, 2008 by Andrea Mrozek Leave a Comment

Stories like this highlight the injustice of Communist China’s one child policy. We forget about the horrible nature of this repressive regime–and extreme family planners in North America are so keen on curbing population growth that they almost never comment on the substantial injustice and curtailing of freedom that tells parents they can’t have as many kids as they want. (They also respond to natural disasters with condoms, but that deserves a post of its own.) Folks–Malthus is dead, literally and figuratively.

The May 12 quake was particularly painful to many Chinese because it killed so many only children. …

If the couple’s legally born child is killed and the couple is left with an illegally born child under the age of 18, that child can be registered as the legal child — an important move that gives the child previously denied rights including free nine years of compulsory education.

This might be worse than a link to a pro-lifer…

…Try a link to Ted Turner:

If steps aren’t taken to stem global warming “we’ll be eight degrees hotter in 30 or 40 years and basically none of the crops will grow,” Turner said during a wide-ranging, hour-long interview with PBS’s Charlie Rose that aired Tuesday. “Most of the people will have died and the rest of us will be cannibals,” said Turner, 69.

Well finally, a better way–more efficient, really–to decrease that surplus population and save the planet.

Feeling crowded since 1969

March 31, 2008 by Tanya Zaleski Leave a Comment

A Quebec current events show, Il va y avoir du sport, recently hosted a debate asking: Must the number of births be limited to save the planet?

Doing my best to translate:

In 2009, or perhaps sooner, planet Earth will be home to 7 billion people.
For several decades now, we’ve been wondering if our planet will reach its limits. How many human beings can the world sustain?

Laure Waridel, author and environmental sociologist, pointed out that the resources we consume on a return flight to Paris are equal to what an Ethiopian person consumes over 12 years. Host Marie-France Bazzo therefore asked, “So we should all be living like the Ethiopians?”

Yes, that’s exactly what she meant (duh.)

By the way, in response to the question, “how many humans,” we apparently exceeded the planet’s optimum capacity sometime between 1969 and 1987, according to the World Health Organization.
