That’s a whole lot of comments on breastfeeding in public

August 28, 2009 by Andrea Mrozek 6 Comments

From time to time I check The Shotgun. This week, I note that their most highly commented post is about breastfeeding in public.

Interesting.

I suppose I should have an opinion on this. I figure a baby’s got to eat, and if the mom is comfortable doing it in public, go for it. We don’t live in a modest age, and if I’m going to see nudity everywhere I look, I’d rather it be because a mom is feeding her baby than the reasons I see it now.

There are some funny comments there.

A friend of mine was discussing this same subject in an online forum a month or two ago and she stated that she preferred to cover herself with a blanket, especially in public to be polite and so she wouldn’t make anybody feel uncomfortable (although she herself didn’t care either way if people covered themselves or not). Of course, you know how the internets are . . . somebody else got all indignant and responded, “There are people who are uncomfortable with mixed-race couples. Should they perhaps not hold hands in public or pretend not to be married so that these folks aren’t offended?”

I’ve noticed it seems to be mostly women who make a fuss about these things. I’ve never had a man (or teenage boy, lol) roll their eyes or gesture in some negative way to my breast feeding in public. Hmmm!

I think it’s mostly men who worry they’ll be tempted into lustful thoughts, and women who worry their men will be tempted :>

Haha, I’m not terribly worried about my husband being tempted by that. Boobs being sucked on by babies really aren’t that attractive.

Although he, sitting here reading over my shoulder sarcastically says to me, “no, I think, ‘hey mother, want another?'” But in seriously, he says he just gets embarrassed and looks away. And I think that most people look away, nothing to be concerned about. I’d rather a mama feed her baby public than a baby crying and hungry!

We don’t live in a modest age, but we should.

“We don’t live in a modest age, but we should.”

    Why?

(Did I post this already? Probably forgot to disable my ad-blocking proxy first.)
