Think social issues lose elections? Think again. An excellent assessment of Harper’s second minority win in today’s Edmonton Journal from PWPL’s very own Rebecca Walberg.

Brigitte says: Hear! Hear! I sure can’t vote for anyone these days, and haven’t done so in well over 10 years. Plenty of people to vote against, but nobody out there stands up for what I believe in – not even partly. Many politicians I know understand my problem; some of them even claim to sympathize. But they never do anything about it, and then they wonder why mushy-middle platitudes about the need to show restraint and the virtues of incrementalism and whatever other rhubarb they always manage to spout, fail to change my mind. Duh.

I would love to be able to vote for a person of integrity, rather than a spineless weasel. I had zero options this election.
Unfortunately, in my riding, the incumbent spineless weasel (CPC) won easily and actually increased his support from 50% to 55% of voters. So the letter I was planning to write him on why I didn’t vote for him probably won’t faze him much.
Being from Winnipeg, It was ridiculous to see the cbc and the freep trying to make abortion an issue in the campaign even though bruino had been out of the closet for a while. I’m not sure the media knew what they were getting into when he didnt run and hide but took them on.
This is a good example of being seen as principled (whether you agree with him or not) and using it for electoral gain versus the other Winnipeg candidate’s approach (Kennard) who also was endorsed by pro life groups and attacked by the media. He ran and hid, and lost.
Hello Andrea Mrozek et al.,
I enjoyed this posting very much. Thank you for the link to Rebecca Walberg’s Edmonton Journal article on “The Bruinooge Effect”. I’m originally from Edmonton, so it’s refreshing that this article was published in what I view as a terribly liberal-leaning newspaper most of the time. I’m currently in Windsor as a novice of the Congregation of St. Basil (Basilian Fathers), and I hope to become a Roman Catholic priest in a few years. This is my first visit to your blog. I have added your link to my blog roll at http://catholiccanada.wordpress.com. Kudos on being pro-woman and pro-life. You have my vote!
