Every now and then you encounter amazing stories like this one:
Oceané McKenzie, with fingers the length of a paper clip and a tiny mop of brown hair, has become the first baby in Canada to successfully undergo a life-saving heart intervention while still in her mother’s womb.
[…]
The experimental and risky procedure, performed by a team of doctors from the Hospital for Sick Children and Mount Sinai Hospital, involved putting a needle through Ms. McKenzie’s abdomen into the left ventricle of the baby’s heart. From there, doctors manoeuvred a wire the diameter of a strand of hair so a tiny balloon catheter could open the narrowed valve leading to Oceané’s aorta.
Doctors believe the little girl will have a normal life. Jolly good show.

Andrea adds: Incidentally, when Terry O’Neill posted about this over at the Western Standard, it spurred on a tremendous debate, mostly between the same people, about “property rights” and “personhood.” I returned to check it out, and found it interesting insofar as if you want to change minds you should know what is convincing to others and what is not. You can check it out, here. (I did not read the whole thread.)

Mother’s Day gift of such a great news on this site! Jolly good I say! If only we could have more of those.
Thank you Brigitte!

I heard a radio ad about a month ago, a heart is beating and a nurse is speaking, it is during a heart operation. She keeps referring to the patient as Mr. Bonder. At the end of the ad, she says that the doctor is now finishing up, Mr. Bonder can continue gestation in his mother’s womb until it is time to be born. The Heart and Stroke Foundation sponsors the ad. So they know this is a person.
As Brigitte says, “way to go, clump of cells!”

Beautiful story! Wow, Andrea – when did WS turn from being strongly pro-life? The first time I encountered your work was in WS Andrea and I strongly recall your cover story on sex-selective abortion. That story absolutely shocked me and I think it is still a ground-breaking piece on a subject that hasn’t really been investigated since.
I posted a lengthy comment over on their thread if anyone is interested. Here is the end of what I posted:
One cannot rationally deny the scientific fact that a fetus is a bioligically unique human being. If Mike Brock, Matthew Johnston or Terrence Watson had been aborted, there would never have been another person like them. Ever. Ponder that thought while imagining the world without your favourite musician, writer or your spouse. Over 100,000 human beings were lost last year in Canada – and with them all their unique talents and ideas they would have brought to the world. There will never be another person like any of them.
