I’ve been doing my best not to celebrate Christmas at all, as I think the commercialism has simply gone too far, but it’s really difficult to do so when everyone else does.
I’ve given not a single present, and made it quite clear that I don’t want anything in return, but I still got a small pile of gifts. Including some that will go to waste, because there is no possibility of me eating all that cheese before it expires.
The family still demanded a tree, and decorations – and as every year, that lead to hours of arguing over where the tree should be placed. We settled for directly in front of a cupboard we need to access, because that’s the least inconvenient place.
Christmas has become a celebration of itsself. A mixture of religion, extreme consumption, reckless spending, and a thousand traditions it’s picked up over the centuries. Even the religion is almost burried, lost beneath a mountain of snowmen and santas. A pointless excuse to spend, spend and spend some more. Social convention forces people to act like they are loving the holiday season, but behind the scenes it’s the most stressful event of the year.

That’s called reality, my friend, not stereotyping.
