Student adopts homeless pregnant cousin

April 16, 2015 by Faye Sonier 2 Comments

What does love look like?

Australian student Tommy Connolly, 23, worked extra shifts in order to adopt his 17 year old homeless cousin. She was pregnant, and he wanted to help her and her child have a better life.

Tommy Connolly, an aspiring athlete at the University of the Sunshine Coast, said he hadn’t seen his 17-year-old cousin for more than a decade when he moved to resume his studies and decided to get in touch.

He found out that his cousin had been sleeping rough on the Gold Coast, was 32 weeks pregnant, had no shoes or phone and was almost illiterate.

With the baby’s father in jail and her parents not on the scene, Mr Connolly said he took his cousin in “to make sure she’d keep the baby, stay off the streets and have a better life”. […]

Mr Connolly admitted he had taken on “the father role as you’d imagine,” but added: “[My cousin] does 90 per cent of the work – and if it’s one or two years of my life I have to put on hold to make sure two lives are going to be saved it’s nothing at all.”

Was it a sacrifice? Yes. Will his immediate life be harder and more challenging? Yes. In fifty years, is he likely to look back on this period of his life and regret giving of himself to help a girl and her baby make it in this hard world? I doubt it.

Tommy Conolly

Love and support for women facing unexpected pregnancies can take all kinds of forms. Connolly proved that self-sacrifice and love, even from someone without extraordinary means, can and will change lives. It might even save them.

Andrea Cohen Barrack and PCC funding

April 15, 2015 by Faye Sonier Leave a Comment

Pat Maloney, Canada’s pro-life investigator, uncovered another interesting fact:

Remember when Fake Person complained to Trillium, and then Trillium revoked funding to Pregnancy Options and Support Centre in Sarnia?

Guess who the CEO is of the Ontario Trillium Foundation? Andrea Cohen Barrack

And guess who the Chairperson is of International Planned Parenthood for Canada? Andrea Cohen Barrack

The one and the same person.

Read the rest here. I’d like to know what kind of policies they have in place to manage conflicts of interest on these matters. How did Trillium decide to revoke funding from the pregnancy care centre? Who was involved in the decision making process? Perhaps Cohen Barrack had nothing to do with this decision. But perhaps she did.

Trillium is a government agency and I’m a very curious tax payer.

Breaking news: Doctors fight for conscience rights

March 24, 2015 by Faye Sonier 4 Comments

This morning a press conference was held in Toronto to announce that a group of physicians are launching a Charter challenge of a policy of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario whichs requires physicians to violate their conscience or religious rights:

Christian medical professionals are challenging Ontario’s College of Physicians and Surgeons in court over a policy that requires doctors to provide or at least refer medical services, even when they clash with personal values. […]

The new Ontario policy requires doctors unwilling to provide certain care, such as prescriptions for contraception, to refer patients in good faith to a “non-objecting, available, and accessible” physician. The policy also says in medical emergencies, the doctors would be required to perform procedures themselves.

Doctors who violate the policy could face disciplinary action, the college policy states.

There is definitely more to come on this story. I wrote about this issue previously, read here.

Lawyer moms are the best…or scariest moms

March 23, 2015 by Faye Sonier Leave a Comment

Time for some humour. As a “Lawyer Mom,” I loved this. And endorse it. It’s all true. Even the bit about laundry. I’m kidding. Sort of.

Exhibit D. We are trained interrogators. You may be able to trip up a 4-year-old claiming the cat used a Sharpie, but are you ready for teenagers with a coordinated cover story? Lawyer moms are. Have a seat in the dining room. Let me just adjust this dimmer switch — there, now I can see you. So, tell me again who was there? Nice. And Jordan drove? I love her Prius. What does it seat… five? Cool. Just one more thing: I think you said there were seven of you. KA-CHUNG. If there’s anything you want to tell me, I suggest you do it now while I can still convince Dad to go easy on you.

Yup. Watch out Jack. Mama’s got her eye on you. And daddy’s a lawyer too. So you might be out of luck…

(This is NOT a picture of my Jack. But a suitable picture nonetheless.)

Strip clubs shutting down across Canada

March 23, 2015 by Faye Sonier 2 Comments

Here’s some good news:

Strip clubs, with flashy signs advertising nude dancers, once had a strong footing in downtown centres across Canada.

But as Cheetah’s Show Lounge in Kelowna, B.C. closes its doors, an adult industry insider says strip clubs are an endangered species being killed off by lack of demand.

But also some news that causes me some mixed feelings :

“The market demand for adult entertainment clubs is a male around a certain age,” Tim Lambrinos, director of the Adult Entertainment Association of Canada, told Daybreak South‘s Chris Walker.

“It seems that young Canadian males are more distracted with other types of interests — Game Boys, plugging in things and so on…

And some unfortunate news:

… and it’s almost as if the young women are the ones bringing them out to the clubs now.”

Well, it’s a start I guess.

Kara Tippetts has passed away

March 22, 2015 by Faye Sonier 1 Comment

Kara TippettsBlythe Hunt wrote a few words here about Kara’s beautiful life.

My little body has grown tired of battle, and treatment is no longer helping. But what I see, what I know, what I have is Jesus. He has still given me breath, and with it I pray I would live well and fade well. By degrees doing both, living and dying, as I have moments left to live. I get to draw my people close, kiss them and tenderly speak love over their lives. I get to pray into eternity my hopes and fears for the moments of my loves. I get to laugh and cry and wonder over Heaven. I do not feel like I have the courage for this journey, but I have Jesus—and He will provide. He has given me so much to be grateful for, and that gratitude, that wondering over His love, will cover us all. And it will carry us—carry us in ways we cannot comprehend.

Gotta love pro-life, family friendly media reps

March 20, 2015 by Faye Sonier 2 Comments

I just got a call from a pro-life journalist to comment on yesterday’s Supreme Court of Canada decision.

I stumbled around looking for excuses as to why I haven’t even read the decision yet, and then finally blurted out that we recently moved, I’m still unpacking boxes, and my crawling baby is tearing my house apart.

The journo laughed, asked about Jack and wished me well.

It was a fun exchange. And I wasn’t left feeling like a slacker for probably being the only religious liberty lawyer in the country who hasn’t read the decision.

God bless friendly media people. Thank you for being kind to this swamped mama.

Kara Tippetts is dying…with dignity

March 20, 2015 by Faye Sonier 1 Comment

Kara TippettsKara Tippetts, the Colorado mama of four, is now in her final days. Kara Tippetts made  headlines in November when she encouraged Brittany Maynard to live out her days rather than kill herself. Both women faced terminal conditions. Maynard chose assisted suicide. Tippetts chose palliative care.

After her diagnosis, Tippetts wrote two books, both of which I’ve read over the last month. She also kept her community and the world abreast of her condition and her deterioration via her blog and Facebook page. If you have time, read through some of the articles written by Tippetts, her husband and her loved ones. They are powerful and they are hopeful. They speak to the sadness of death and separation from loved ones, but they also speak of love, community, hope and shine a light on the best palliative care has to offer.

A documentary about Tippetts is in the process of being made and the trailer is here. I hope it has a powerful impact on the global debate on euthanasia and assisted suicide. I hope it influences our common understanding of the term “death with dignity”.

Tippetts didn’t chose assisted suicide, but it would be dishonest to say that this woman is not dying with dignity.

Pregnancy Care Centre National Day of Prayer

March 20, 2015 by Faye Sonier 2 Comments

Woman in PrayerPWPL isn’t a faith-based blog, but we know a number of our readers come from various faith traditions. Please join me and pro-lifers across the country on April 2 for the Canadian Association of Pregnancy Support Services’ first annual National Day of Prayer. Put in your calendar, set an alert on your smartphone. Let’s pray together.

Some prayer points:

PRAISE for God’s mercy, grace, and for the privilege we have to walk alongside those who are hurting, scared, and alone.

PRAISE for the difference pregnancy centres are making in communities across Canada.

FORGIVENESS for our country, for not valuing each and every God-given human life.

PURITY for all leaders in pregnancy centres and for the church as a whole – to seek His ways and follow Him.

PROTECTION from the enemy and the lies put out to distort the reputation of pregnancy centres.

BOLDNESS to stay true to our mission, especially when that mission is counter-cultural.

Prayer is powerful. It changes the world, and perhaps most importantly, it changes those of us who pray. In the words of Elizabeth Elliot:

Prayer lays hold of  God’s plan and becomes the link between His will and its accomplishment on earth. Amazing things happen, and we are given the privilege of being the channels of the Holy Spirit’s prayer.

#No2Trudeau Campaign

March 19, 2015 by Faye Sonier 7 Comments

As many readers of this blog know, Liberal party leader Justin Trudeau stated this past year that his MPs must fall into line, and vote pro-choice on any bills or motions that cross their desks. Freedom of conscience for his MPs was tossed to the side in favour of a rather radical pro-choice position. I’ve written on this issue several times in the last few years.

Oh democratic and human rights. I miss you.

Anyway, in response to his decision and in anticipation of the upcoming federal election, Campaign Life Coalition Youth and the Canadian Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform have lauched the #No2Trudeau campaign. You can learn about the campaign here:

The 2015 federal election presents the pro-life movement with a tremendous opportunity in Canada. For the first time ever, we have in Justin Trudeau a leader that we must unify against given that he’s unambiguously and vocally pro-abortion, supportive of the so-called “right to die,” and opposes the government’s anti-prostitution legislation which attempts to combat human trafficking to keep women safer. Justin Trudeau has declared that there is no choice but pro-“choice” in the Liberal party of Canada, forcing Members of Parliament in his caucus to vote down any legislation restricting abortion, regardless of their conscience or their beliefs. This does not just impact pro-life MPs and members of the Liberal Party, it also impacts the majority of Canadians who feel that abortion should be subject to at least some restrictions. Justin Trudeau is not only an extremist on the abortion issue, he is also forcing the Liberal Party to join him in his extremism.

There’s a good chance that Jonathon and Alissa are coming to a city near you to speak. Check out their tour schedule here. They’ll be in Ottawa May 9th.
