This is the moment I’m worried about

February 18, 2009 by Andrea Mrozek Leave a Comment

Bristol Palin talks about how hard it was to tell her parents she was pregnant:

In the interview, Bristol admitted that confessing the pregnancy to her family was more difficult than the birth of her baby — saying it was “harder than labor.”

Since labour is not universally acknowledged as being super easy, we can imagine what it felt like for her to tell her parents. That’s when our abortion-friendly culture kicks in for so many. For how many kids do you bet it’s easier to go “fix the problem” than have to tell anyone?

Rebecca adds: The pro-life charity Efrat in Israel works to stop abortion by trying to provide whatever an individual woman would need to make her choose to give birth to the baby. Very often, what teenagers living at home need is someone to come with them when they tell their parents, who can de-escalate and moderate the inevitable anger and betrayal and disappointment and fear most parents face when they learn their underage daughter is going to be a mother.  They also need to know that there are people and an organization who will find a home for them if their worst fears are realized and their parents throw them out. My understanding is that the vast majority of the time, this doesn’t happen – but an awful lot of pregnant teenagers are scared that it might. If telling your parents seems scarier than labour, it probably seems a lot scarier than an abortion, especially when abortion is presented as a minor procedure, about as painful and less time-consuming than getting a cavity filled (which, from a purely technical perspective, is probably accurate).

About Bristol

December 23, 2008 by Brigitte Pellerin Leave a Comment

I read somewhere that Bristol Palin was due to have her baby any day now. I’m sure I’m not the only one who hasn’t forgotten about her. Good luck, Bristol.

Read while waiting in line at the grocery store…

September 8, 2008 by Véronique Bergeron 3 Comments

An entertainment rag (can’t remember which one) showing this picture of the Palin family pre-Trig (their youngest child). The caption – loosely quoted: “Rumours about Bristol being Trig’s birth mother were sparked after the publication of this picture showing Bristol apparently pregnant and Sarah Palin, well, not.”

Sounds like some entertainment columnists have seen too many photoshopped pictures of anorexic teenagers for the good of the rest of us. It’s called an abdomen and most of us have one, including my 12-year-old daughter. And my 11-year-old son. Scary.

Sex can lead to pregnancy

September 1, 2008 by Andrea Mrozek 2 Comments

Sarah Palin’s daughter Bristol, age 17, is pregnant. And so what, I say. She plans on marrying the father and keeping the child. While I agree with the official press release from the McCain camp that it will cause her to grow up more quickly than she ever expected, I also see this as good news. She is getting married and starting a family. It’s only in very recent history that we think of getting pregnant young as wasted potential. Her child (or by that point, children) will be competent near-adults by the time she hits 32. Which is not exactly over the hill, if I do say so myself.

Brigitte would like to highlight the following paragraph from the story Andrea links to:

Senior McCain campaign officials said McCain knew of the daughter’s pregnancy when he selected Palin last week as his vice presidential running mate, deciding that it did not disqualify the 44-year-old governor in any way.

Disqualify? To be the parent of a teenager who is sexually active? Yikes; not many people would be allowed to run for office if that were the case. Imagine if we had learned that her daughter had had an abortion instead of keeping her baby. Do you think the campaign would have felt it necessary to make the same comment? Do you think we’d even know about it?

Andrea adds: Good point, Brigitte. One more thing–this situation highlights how inane our abortion-friendly culture is. I looked back at my own post–I wrote she is “keeping the child.” Was I supposed to write “keeping the fetus”? No–we only downgrade to non-human status when abortion is the course of action. A point made at ProWomanProLife before–which I’ll highlight here, is that those who are pro-life are not genetically different from the rest of the population. Namely, a 17-year-old who is having sex with her boyfriend can also be pro-life. It’s the outcome that can redeem the situation. Marriage and a baby does make a happier situation out of an “unexpected pregnancy” than abortion.
