How I got four knives through airport security

March 21, 2009 by Andrea Mrozek 6 Comments

So this morning I went through airport security with a gift for my niece; a beautiful toy tea set in a basket, with napkins, plates and cutlery. She’s two. The gift goes through the X-ray machine, the security guard wants to take a look. I, not wanting to unwrap the gift, explain that yes, there are four knives in there (and four spoons, and four forks) but it’s a tea set for a two-year-old, and they are one inch long. He asks, “are they sharp?” To repeat: it’s a tea set for a two-year-old. He turned out to be really nice, has a daughter with whom he also has tea. They waved me through, tea set and all.

What could have been another ridiculous security-at-the-airport story has a good ending. Most unusual.

The squeaky wheels of student unions

March 5, 2008 by Andrea Mrozek Leave a Comment

Reasonable people have reasonable concerns about abortion-and, I might add, about pro-life arguments.

But you don’t find reasonable people at student unions, for the most part. And you certainly don’t find them at “women’s centres.” (That’s a place on campus the vast majority of women just don’t go.)

Yet these are the people who have power, as we’re seeing at York right now. They are the quickest to take offence, and their voices are the loudest. Precisely because they are completely unreasonable, they are heard.

The reasonable students are studying, playing sports and doing whatever it is students do.

These centres represent a fringe, barricade mentality: They are trapped in 60s ideology and unable to move with the times.

I’m glad Ms. Kelly Holloway of the York University Graduate Students Assocation banned the abortion debate: It highlights the strange alternate universe she inhabits for all to see. And I thank her for the national, front-page coverage on the abortion debate that never was.

Perhaps soon we can all move on a little from the notion that pro-lifers are the extreme ones here.

A fish on a bicycle walks into a bar…

January 27, 2008 by Andrea Mrozek Leave a Comment

Whether it’s because we’ve all fallen asleep at our tasks like Snow White, or whether we’ve been outplayed in a subtle and long-standing culture war, what is clear is that we are living in a new era of post-feminism.

From yesterday’s Globe: A discussion of why feminism is out of style. Maybe it’s because no one knows what “feminism”  means. Or maybe it’s because feminism today has built itself up on false notions, like “abortion rights.” Or maybe, or maybe… Either way, the fish and bicycle act did get old, like an overtold joke.

The concrete wall

January 18, 2008 by Andrea Mrozek Leave a Comment

The headline said “Women still earn less than men for same work”

But that’s not what the Equal Pay Coalition said at all. What they want is that “female jobs be paid the same as male jobs of similar value…”

Big, BIG difference. But in the end George Jonas is still right. These folks aren’t worried about evidence. There’s no glass ceiling, so they continue to bang their heads against a big ole’ concrete wall.

I’m not sure what we know about “glass ceilings.” Was there one, or do the equality people make that up too? One of the problems in the history faculties these days is the rewriting of history to suit different perspectives and a “gendered perspective” is top of the list. It always made me wonder about the veracity of what I was studying, and whether we weren’t layering on way too many of our own perspectives, without letting the historical facts and faces tell the story.

Poll results worth repeating

January 13, 2008 by Andrea Mrozek Leave a Comment

More women than men are pro-life. 34 per cent of Canadian women believe a baby should be protected from conception, as compared with 26 per cent of men. Read it here.

Now why bring out this news from October? Because information and good, old-fashioned logic are the main defence against those in favour of extreme choices, like abortion. And they’ll be out, guns a blazin’, to celebrate Morgentaler this month. [Editor’s note: “Guns a blazin'” is an idiom. No human rights tribunals, please, on how I have hurt some downcast feminist’s feelings over her passionately non-violent stance on everything but abortion. Thank you.]

Rebecca adds:

That’s interesting. I wonder what the reason is for the discrepancy. I think one function of readily available abortion, though, has been to weaken the link between sex and reproduction in a way that particularly lessens men’s responsibilities toward an unplanned child.

All women are equal, but some women are more equal than others

January 10, 2008 by Andrea Mrozek Leave a Comment

Hats off to George Jonas for this in today’s Ottawa Citizen.

The suggestion that America, or western societies in general, are still patriarchal is a state of mind. Evidence that in key professions — law, medicine — where female graduates now either match or outnumber males, won’t make a dent in it.

He goes on to discuss how evidence will not sway equality commissions, convinced of glass ceilings and a pervasive conspiracy attacking women. However, the problem may yet be inequality — between women. With apologies to George Orwell, some women are indeed more equal than others. Would the representative on the equality commission who represents pro-life women please raise her hand?   Right, I didn’t think so. I’ll keep waiting.

Beauty and intelligence

January 9, 2008 by Andrea Mrozek Leave a Comment

Today, feminists everywhere celebrate what would have been Simone de Beauvoir’s 100th birthday. She was Jean-Paul Sartre’s “life partner.” But let’s be perfectly clear: It’s not that she would have needed Sartre, no no, she was indeed independent. No woman ever needs a man. It’s just that articles about her tend to mention her relationship to him straight away, and then segue into her completely unique contributions to feminism and philosophy. One of her beliefs, as per Der Spiegel:

…Beauvoir refused to buy into the notion, considered a matter of course in the bourgeois society of the day, that beauty and intelligence are incompatible.

Though it’s certainly not clear that they always go together, either. Probably need to go on a case by case basis on that one.
