Just doing what they were told

July 30, 2008 by Andrea Mrozek Leave a Comment

This little report talks about how kids today take the big step of having sex without a condom to show how committed they are. It’s like an engagement!

Here we witness the power of lust to take two strangers having sex to the level of two strangers committed to the joys of enduring an STD together, til death do they part. Cuz

a ring is very temporary. You can sort of just take that ring off whereas if you don’t use condoms and get an STD then it is sort of a much less temporary result of your engagement than a tan line on your finger.

Planned Parenthood must be quite distraught. Was it the curriculum? Were we boring? Did we not say you could have sex anytime, any place so long as it was safe? And there’s the rub: These kids are doing exactly what they were told. After all, before they move to condomless sex, they get tested. Now that’s romance.

Girls having sex

June 10, 2008 by Tanya Zaleski Leave a Comment

The Conseil du statut de la femme has raised the question of choice. No kidding:

The question is to know if girls really make a clear and educated choice to experience a precocious sexuality, or if this is purely a direct impact of the media.

Are we, in Quebec, calling sexually active teens ‘girls?’ Are we raising the issue of ill-informed choice as a potential problem regarding sexuality (and therefore reproduction)?

The article goes on to say:

Among adolescents in a couple relationship, one in five girls (20%) affirms having had a sexual encounter without actually desiring it. These are “extremely worrisome statistics,” figures the CSF.

The CSF confirms that the younger a girl starts being sexually active, the more sexual partners she will have and the higher the likelihood of her contracting sexually transmitted diseases. Hmm…That sounds a bit like a dose of abstinence education to me.

There was no mention of unintended pregnancy and subsequent (ill-informed, undesired) abortion risks.

Rebecca adds: “… purely a direct impact of the media.” That’s a handy bit of slicing and dicing of reality, isn’t it? Are those really the only two possibilities: a) “girls” are making informed and rational choices to be sexually active or b) it’s the media’s fault? Parents, teachers, clergy, and all the other adults who are more directly connected to individual children have a responsibility to provide young people with not only facts, but also moral guidance and support. I can gripe about the media with the best of them, but there are some rather more specific culprits in the discussion of why teenage girls might be making regretable choices.

Celibacy U

April 15, 2008 by Tanya Zaleski Leave a Comment

Here’s a little ad being circulated around Ryerson University. What a surprise–it’s being torn apart in the comments section. It seems it isn’t politically correct to refer to your personal values as “more honorable.”

[youtube:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hn6mIK8G2Vc]

But let’s be honest. If saving yourself for your ideal mate is the motive behind the celibacy, is that not more honorable than, say, a one-night stand?

Oh, right! We use the remote to change the channel, order food that’s ready in about a minute, and use high-speed internet. What makes me think waiting for sex in our instant-gratification society will be a very popular idea?

And yet, I’m decidedly optimistic.

Andrea doesn’t want to be mean yet she wonders: Whether some of these people are celibate by default, not honourable choice. Nothing against Star Trek, but…

Brigitte doesn’t mind being mean: Holy Corny Cheesy Cringe-Inducing Terrible Clip, Batman! Is this for real? I’m all for sexual restraint (sorry, I don’t think celibacy is necessarily for everybody, but between that and indiscriminate hooking-up, I’m sure there’s a healthy middle), and I am not always as pessimistic as I sound, but golly, this video is so awful it would have pushed me far away from celibacy…

Andrea again: Apparently, the clip, having been torn apart in their comments section, will now be torn apart in ours. Perhaps we should take it down. I don’t want to be responsible for someone running out into a torrid and inappropriate affair because of bad celibacy advertising–no booze required. I once heard someone say it’s fine to be celibate: You should, however, refrain from advertising publicly. Proof positive.
