Look up “pro-abortion” in the dictionary and it will say…

October 16, 2008 by Andrea Mrozek 1 Comment

…Barack Obama. The term “pro-abortion” really works for him. Read all about that, here.

The take away is for pro-lifers who like Obama and would vote for him under the pretense that he wants to diminish the number of abortions. He doesn’t, and they should take a long hard look at who they are voting for.

In the end, the efforts of Obama’s apologists to depict their man as the true pro-life candidate that Catholics and Evangelicals may and even should vote for, doesn’t even amount to a nice try. Voting for the most extreme pro-abortion political candidate in American history is not the way to save unborn babies.

Hoping Father De Souza has his facts wrong

October 16, 2008 by Andrea Mrozek Leave a Comment

Why? Because of this:

[Barack Obama] has said that his first act as president would be to sign the Freedom of Choice Act, which would eliminate by federal statute any abortion regulations in all of the 50 states.

and this:

…the substance of his abortion policy is extreme and counter-productive. It puts him far outside the American mainstream. So why does he adopt it? Voters can only conclude that Mr. Obama believes in his policy sincerely.

It’s not often I sincerely hope that writers are wrong. Sadly, here, Father De Souza isn’t. Barack Obama is radically pro-abortion, out of a sincere belief. Babies as punishment–that was no gaffe. That’s how he feels. Good thing I’m not looking to legislative reform for any source of inspiration on the topic of abortion–whether in Canada or the USA, it doesn’t look like there will be any relief, any time soon.

Not even the choir is singing…

October 15, 2008 by Andrea Mrozek 1 Comment

I agree with Paul Tuns over at Sobering Thoughts. Robert Fulford’s piece about Harper is good.

But so far as we can gather, nothing [Harper] did during 33 months in office altered his reputation as a potential danger to what many Canadians like to call, in their most euphoric moments, “Canadian values.” In trying to convert voters to his view of government, he seems to be dreaming an impossible dream, as the song goes, while struggling “to fight for the right.” Not enough of us are singing along.

Not enough are singing along–not dedicated conservatives (small-c) and certainly not the rest of the country. To win a majority, you need a leader who can at least inspire the choir, and then do a bit more.

Rebecca adds: “To win a majority, you need a leader who can at least inspire the choir, and then do a bit more.”

Indeed.  In 2006, Harper went up against a reeling Liberal party coming off Adscam and scandals involving biker gangs, led by the comically bumbling Paul Martin, and only managed a minority. Yesterday, Harper went up against a Liberal party advocating a massive and elaborate tax hike and no sound fiscal policy in the midst of an economic crisis, led by Stephane Dion’s leadership which brings to mind Abbot and Costello skits, and managed only a (larger) minority. At some point, Conservatives should ask if he’s ever going to close the deal.

The next question is, of course, who would be better? And how do Conservatives make him (or her, but probably him) the leader without yet another conservative schism that hands the Liberals another decade on a platter?

The thrill of voting

October 14, 2008 by Andrea Mrozek Leave a Comment

I’ve poked fun of Judith Timson before: Her views on life are about as out of touch as, well, the rest of Toronto’s elite. Bygones–this piece about voting is a good one. Voting is, however, more than a thrill, rather a true right in democratic countries. (Politics is personal in so many regards: I’m Canadian because my parents were denied this right, among others. I don’t wish communism on anyone–but my family history lends a certain perspective, which puts me squarely in the Take Voting Seriously camp.)

Books you don’t want to read

Alec Baldwin and Lynne Spears on parenting.  So much to read, so little time. Next up: Government on efficiency. (Or how about politicians on honesty?–It is election day after all.)

If you think Palin is extreme on abortion…

October 11, 2008 by Andrea Mrozek 1 Comment

…you must concede, so too is Obama:

Palin skewered Obama for voting “present” while in the Illinois State Senate on a bill that would have required medical care for fetuses that survived abortion. “So in short, Sen. Obama is a politician who has long since left behind even the middle ground on the issue of life,” she said.

Botched abortions equals babies born alive–and oftentimes left to die in sterile, metal dishes to die alone for their few minutes of life here on earth. Something’s wrong when you need an act of Congress to tell people how to treat “babies born alive.” And something is even more wrong when politicians vote against giving those babies care.

Now he’s a “catalyst for change”

October 11, 2008 by Andrea Mrozek 1 Comment

I didn’t watch the awards ceremony for Morgentaler. It’s a very busy season, right now, but even if it weren’t, I’d probably prefer root canal.

I note from this article that Morgentaler

was praised as “a catalyst for change and important debate.”

Important debate, yes. Except that my opponents have been arguing since I was born that there is no debate. That’s over, done. Resolved. No one questions “abortion rights.”

Summarizing, then, the freedom of speech issue–when you support abortion, you are a catalyst for an important debate. When you are against abortion you are a pesk, some spending time in jail, others sidelined from their working spheres, be it politics, law, medicine or journalism.

Again, euphemisms are the hallmark of the “abortion rights” world. It’s almost exclusively through concealing what they stand for that they win.

Véronique adds: The headline of the day, from my local French newspaper (Le Droit). A quote, presumably taken from the award ceremony (I couldn’t say, I was not invited.):

Une société plus humaine” (A more humane society).

With less humans in it.

That makes sense. Doesn’t it?

“The abortion distortion”

October 10, 2008 by Andrea Mrozek 2 Comments

Those engaged in fighting abortion will note that the rules change–government procedure, law, and science, when abortion is the topic. It’s called “the abortion distortion.” I just spoke to Rachel MacNair yesterday about this regarding women’s mental health after abortion.

Read about another distortion here:

Joanne Byfield, president of the anti-abortion group Life Canada, said the government caught them off guard by giving the Order to Dr. Morgentaler in Quebec City in the midst of a federal election campaign and on the eve of the Thanksgiving long weekend. “I think the whole thing has been designed to stifle protest,” Ms. Byfield said. “We won’t send anyone (to Quebec) because it’s hard to mobilize people across the country within a day’s notice.” A spokeswoman for Gov. Gen. Michaëlle Jean acknowledged that Order of Canada ceremonies are rarely held outside Rideau Hall in Ottawa, but stressed it wasn’t a precedent.

Embarrassing

October 9, 2008 by Andrea Mrozek 2 Comments

[Morgentaler] is hailed for not hesitating to “put himself at risk in his determined drive to increase health-care options for Canadian women.” The citation also adds Morgentaler has “heightened awareness of women’s reproductive health issues among medical professionals and the Canadian public.”

“Heightened awareness“? Sure, if they want to call it that. Let me just get my definitions straight. “Choice” means death and “heightened awareness” means no one ever says anything that falls even slightly short of adulation for abortion in the public eye without being persecuted. I guess that’s a form of awareness. Albeit along more fearful, Animal Farm sort of lines.

________________________

Tanya finds that: “reproductive health issues” is NOT a euphemism for abortion. Don’t they have enough sugar-coated words already? I dare say that Morgentaler is not likely a revered expert on things like a satisfying sex-life, enabling women to go safely through a pregnancy, and providing couples with the best chance of having a healthy infant. (These are also all aspects of the WHO’s definition of reproductive health.)

Morgentaler practiced as a general practitioner and eventually became strictly an abortion doctor. He therefore does NOT have a “heightened awareness of women’s reproductive health issues among medical professionals.”

_________________________

Rebecca adds: Putting on my healthcare policy analyst hat, there are a lot of aspects of healthcare for Canadian women that need to be improved. We need both increased access to midwifery and also lower C-section and complication rates for women treated by obstetricians; more sophisticated treatment of endometriosis, so that women with this condition can have a higher quality of life without losing their fertility by having a hysterectomy; more research into HRT and other approaches to dealing with menopause; and a better appreciation of how drugs affect women, since most are tested on groups of (middle aged, usually white) men, who metabolize drugs differently and experience different side effects than women do in general.

Blanket access to abortion, at any time, for any reason doesn’t make my healthcare wishlist. But now that Morgentaler’s achieved that, surely he’ll turn his activism to these and other priorities, since he’s so devoted to increasing “healthcare options” for women, right?

Protest tomorrow

October 9, 2008 by Andrea Mrozek Leave a Comment

This from Wanda Hartlin, Communications Coordinator, Campaign Life Coalition, Ottawa:

If you have heard the latest news about the Order of Canada being awarded to Henry Morgentaler you would be aware that the award is being presented to Henry Morgentaler tomorrow (Fri. Oct. 10) at 10 am in Quebec City. A protest is being held in Ottawa at the Governor General’s residence tomorrow morning (Friday) from 9:45 to 10:30 am to protest giving the Order of Canada to Henry Morgentaler. It is not being organized by anyone specifically; it is being organized by pro-life and pro-family groups. Please pass along the information.
