An inspiring column

December 24, 2008 by Brigitte Pellerin Leave a Comment

In the Ottawa Citizen today:

My mother’s last lucid moment was also one of the most telling, even though at the time I had no idea what it meant. As she lay in hospital, drifting into what my brother and I knew were her final moments, she suddenly looked up and said: “I don’t care about all this. The two of you make everything worthwhile.”

How was that possible, I wondered. How could dying at the age of 51 make up for having raised a pair of honest boys? I knew little of real life then, preferring in a selfish unmarried way to focus on my career and the dream of owning a BMW.

I still have that fantasy, but the financial crisis means it will stay locked in my imagination rather than turning up in Santa’s sack. I must look for consolations elsewhere in these bad, sad days.

About Bristol

December 23, 2008 by Brigitte Pellerin Leave a Comment

I read somewhere that Bristol Palin was due to have her baby any day now. I’m sure I’m not the only one who hasn’t forgotten about her. Good luck, Bristol.

Why indeed

December 22, 2008 by Brigitte Pellerin 1 Comment

A longish (but mildly entertaining) piece about “liquid leggings” that takes way too many words to come to the only obvious conclusion. It’s an idiotic piece of clothing. That just about every woman who is not Angelina Jolie should stay well away from. I was way ahead of the curve; I never had any intention of wearing those things. Sometimes, having no interest in fashion is the most fashionable thing around. Squelch. Squelch. Squeak. Squeak.

Andrea adds:

It will likely be one of those trends that’s increasingly hard to understand once the moment has passed, she says. “In the future, we’ll probably look back and say ‘Oh my God, I was wearing plastic leggings in public.

In the future, like after lunch today? I note they are difficult to wash, and don’t breathe. Mmmmm.

Tanya advises: Difficult to wash? Whatever! Just pass a Clorox wipe over them and you’re done.

I’m all for supporting a culture of life, but this is just too much. It gets points for originality, though.

Andrea adds: Those clever pro-abortion types, making all kinds of funny, satirical toys around the theme of abortion. Because everyone wants to be reminded that we sanitize killing and repackage it as “reproductive choice” this Christmas. Buy one today!  Just another way to make money, I suppose, and funnel it back into Planned Parenthood. Though I find this ridiculous, I’ll agree with the reader who commented that it actually proves the pro-life point. I’d been sent the “fetal cookie cutters” before, and the yuck factor is so great with those that you start to wonder, really wonder, about the person who would create such a thing.

Tanya adds: Love this, and it’s from the most pointless Christmas special ever. Perhaps if they hadn’t based the half-hour special around the California Raisins — not exactly what I call timeless — it would be playing alongside Rudolph, Frosty, and the Grinch today.

A terrific read

December 18, 2008 by Brigitte Pellerin 1 Comment

I just finished Nick Hornby’s Slam, a “teen fiction” novel in which a teenage boy gets his girlfriend pregnant. I’m a big fan – I even like the movie they made out of High Fidelity, even though it is not (or ought not to be) properly “teen” fiction. Lots of swear words and other vulgar things – like in this scene, here.

Anyway. None of that in Slam. Just a touching story very nicely written. At some point, the girlfriend, Alicia, has “the” conversation with her mother about whether she should keep the baby. It doesn’t last very long:

So you don’t know what you think yet, do you? You can’t possibly know whether you want to keep it or not.”

“Oh, I know that,” said Alicia. “I’m not killing my baby.”

“You’re not killing a baby. You’re –”

“I’ve been reading about it on the Internet. It’s a baby.”

Alicia’s mum sighed.

“I wondered where you’d been getting this stuff from,” she said. “Listen, the people who post things on the Internet about abortions, they’re all evangelical Christians, and –”

“Doesn’t matter what they are, does it? Facts are facts,” said Alicia.

As I said, a terrific read. Not preachy at all. Just, you know, real.

Now we know

All those who said that complaints about Mark Steyn, Ezra Levant and company were not about Islam but rather about showing respect and practicing “responsible” journalism? They were wrong.

It is so about Islam. If you’re a Muslim, and you want to write, for instance, that:

  • Homosexuals and lesbians should be “exterminated in this life”
  • “men are superior to women and better than them”. In general, “men have a more complete intellect and memory than women”

…well, then you’re cool. That’s just normal. No reason for complaint, here. But dare reprint cartoons showing The Prophet in an unflattering way (or any way at all), and you’ll be dragged through no end of costly legal battles.

Clearer than clear, thanks.

Gay penguins have rights, too

December 15, 2008 by Brigitte Pellerin 3 Comments

Bigoted penguins alert!

peng

A pair of gay penguins thrown out of their zoo colony for repeatedly stealing eggs have been given some of their own to look after following a protest by animal rights groups.

Last month the birds were segregated after they were caught  placing stones at the feet of parents before waddling away with their eggs.

But angry visitors to Polar Land in Harbin, northern China, complained it wasn’t fair to stop the couple from becoming surrogate fathers and urged zoo bosses to give them a chance.

In response, zookeepers gave the pair two eggs laid by an inexperienced first-time mother.

‘We decided to give them two eggs from another couple whose hatching ability had been poor and they’ve turned out to be the best parents in the whole zoo,’ said one of the keepers.

‘It’s very encouraging and if this works out well we will try to arrange for them to become real parents themselves with artificial insemination.’

Ah, progress.

Such tolerance

Arsonists attack Palin church.

Alaska governor Sarah Palin said an arson attack on her home church could have been linked to “undeserved negative attention” from her failed Republican vice-presidential campaign.

Damage to the Wasilla Bible Church was estimated at one million dollars (£670,000), authorities said on Saturday.

No-one was injured in Friday night’s fire, which happened while a handful of people, including two children, were inside, said Fire Chief James Steele.

He said the blaze was being investigated as an arson but did not know of any recent threats to the church. Authorities did not know whether Mrs Palin’s connection to the church was relevant to the fire, Mr Steele said.

While people, including children, were inside. A nice touch, that.
