The truth is…

May 4, 2014 by Johanne Brownrigg Leave a Comment

There are many ways to approach the prolife argument. They vary from the purely rational to the purely emotional. We have biology, psychology, spirituality on our side. Every so often though, these all come together in one form or another and the truth is stark. There is no dressed up pretty little truth, only the cold truth. This story is just one example.

A 15 year old foster child is sexually assaulted by her foster father. This, after having been moved to 28 different foster homes in 2 years. No one believed her. She got pregnant. She didn’t choose abortion. Her pregnancy revealed the ugly truth, her truth.

The pregnancy is the means by which a horrible man is stopped. The story doesn’t end there. Read the details here: http://www.ottawasun.com/2014/05/03/woman-sues-ccas-foster-dad-who-got-her-pregnant

This week the biggest prolife event in the country will happen on Parliament Hill. The theme is RU-4LIFE?  The theme is a deliberate counter to the application for RU 486,  a poison pill.

There is no magic pill that will erase the difficulty of a crisis pregnancy. Sometimes there is only a bitter pill: the truth. And the truth can set you free.

Children’s rights forgotten again

May 2, 2014 by Natalie Sonnen 1 Comment

I thought this was an excellent article and well worth the read (along with Andrea’s most excellent piece).  Lisa Ravary makes crucial points about the rights of children NOT to be biological orphans, whether the couple creating them through human reproductive technologies is heterosexual or homosexual.

People don’t seem to care anymore that the building blocks of life can be bought on specs from glitzy American websites, complete with “Your cart is empty” and “Proceed to checkout” sections, that the embryo created in a lab will be carried to term by a woman without any genetic ties to it (she will be a “special auntie” said Legendre) and delivered by caesarian.

Gay or straight, parents should not be working to create genetic orphans, with no ties to their biological history.

Children are not a right – and the children that we do have, have a right to know where they came from.  I would add further, that children have a right to their biological parents, meaning their father and their mother.

Today’s Post and my article

May 2, 2014 by Andrea Mrozek 5 Comments

I’m always grateful when any paper publishes a piece by yours truly, but in today’s Post someone edited my use of the word “pro-choice” and made it into “anti-abortion,” which obviously has the opposite meaning. Makes for a tricky read, and so I thought I’d post a little addendum by yours truly, here. I don’t think the piece is online so I can’t link to it here.

(Update: The corrected online version is here.)

12 days left

May 1, 2014 by Andrea Mrozek 5 Comments

I’m trying to think just now, of who I can personally ask to give money to this crowdfunding effort for the Gosnell movie. The funding is ticking upwards, but they have not yet met their goal and I really hope they do. Ponder who you can send a request to donate to. Here’s the link.

Again:

  • These are great filmmakers (I’ve seen two of their other movies)
  • They are doing something totally counter-cultural
  • This will draw attention to the plight of the unborn in general, not just in the Gosnell case
  • We need more pro-life documentaries and movies

Keeping a pregnancy private

May 1, 2014 by Andrea Mrozek Leave a Comment

One woman’s attempt to keep her pregnancy totally private. I think it’s interesting and it draws attention, once again, to the fact that in using something like Facebook, we are the product, people. It’s not a free service.

“But abortion is legal!”

April 29, 2014 by Faye Sonier 1 Comment

Another response to the hysteria surrounding the New Brunswick Morgentaler Clinic closure from Peter Ryan, the Executive Director of the New Brunswick Right to Life Association:

Some will retort, “But abortion is legal.” As if that settles the argument. It does not, for three reasons.

First, the argument is a non sequitur. It is legal for me to build a rocket ship and fly to the moon. It does not follow the government has to pay for it.

Second, there is no Canadian legislation defining abortion’s legality. The 1988 Morgentaler decision by the Supreme Court addressed the criminality of abortion, not public funding. No Canadian court has ruled the Charters of Rights requires a province to fund unrestricted abortion at a private clinic. It is an open issue.

Third, it is dishonorable to hide behind the law. Slavery was once legal. It was legal for Nazis to kill Jews. That did not make those activities just. Those who argue “abortion is legal” must explain why that is just, and cannot skirt the truth that abortion kills a child.

Read the rest here. And if you haven’t signed the petition yet, please go do it now.

Primer on the law and abortion funding

April 28, 2014 by Faye Sonier Leave a Comment

Just thought I would draw your attention again to these two brief resources which explain the law on health care funding in Canada for “medically necessary” services and how abortions are not required by law to be funded by the provinces. Perhaps they’ll be helpful if you’re writing an op-ed piece or something along those lines. Both resources are from The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada.

  • Provincial Decisions: Abortion Funding in Canada
  • Busting the Three Biggest Myths on the Government Funding of Abortions

Here’s an excerpt from the blog post I wrote:

The facts on abortion funding mean that there is room for pro-life advocacy and engagement.

Provincial Ministers of Health could and should be persuaded to reconsider their provinces healthcare priorities. Attention may be drawn to the associations of physicians who are making clear, compelling and public statements about proper and comprehensive healthcare for women, and how this healthcare need not include the aborting of children.

This is not a hopeless cause. Public opinion is split on the issue, with less than half of Canadians supporting the general trend of government funding for abortions on demand. A 2010 Angus Reid Public Opinion poll found that only 44% of respondents believed that our “health care system should fund abortions whenever they are requested.” 39% believed the procedures should only be funded in cases of emergencies and 10% believed that abortions should never be funded.

While it may have been a complex task to untangle the legislation and policies relating to abortion funding, our advocacy work going forward need not be. The message is simple: our tax dollars don’t need to fund abortions.

About New Brunswick

April 28, 2014 by Andrea Mrozek 1 Comment

Small, emphasis on small, protests in support of using government funds to keep a private abortion clinic open in New Brunswick happened this past weekend.

Small groups of pro-choice protesters rallied in Montreal and Ottawa today in support of women in New Brunswick after the announcement earlier this month that the province’s only private abortion clinic would be shut down.

There are no news items I can see from the “rally” on Parliament Hill. Which would, I assume, mean that one was smaller than the five people we see here in Montreal.

Vicki Saporta of the National Abortion Federation in the USA is getting involved from Washington DC. People in New Brunswick believe this clinic is being used as a PR stunt to change New Brunswick’s law. When Vicki gets involved I’m inclined to agree.

Support New Brunswick and sign a pro-life petition, here.

Keep funding the Gosnell movie

April 28, 2014 by Andrea Mrozek 2 Comments

I just thought of another reason to give money to this movie: They are not there yet but it looks like it will be successful. This will drive all the right people crazy.

They need $2.1 million. They are at about 1.4 million. If they don’t get 2.1 million by May 12, they lose all the money. If they do, the movie will be made.

You know what to do! Donate here.
